On March 8, the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) Commissioner, Dr. Jerome Singleton, issued a decision in a protest filed on February 26, 2022. The protest asserted a scoring error incorrectly awarded the SC state 4-A 220-pound weight class title to Indian Land High School. The official ruling from the SCHSL recognized David Floyd (Indian Land) and Jackson Chavis (Hartsville) as “co-champions” in 4A at 220 lbs.
A SCHSL statement followed - “After reviewing the information provided, investigating the circumstances surrounding the matter, and discussing the matter with representatives from the South Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association, the Class AAAA 220-pound weight class will recognize and award co-champions to include Jackson Chavis of Hartsville High School.”
This is the second time in SC wrestling state history that two wrestlers will share a weight class state championship, with the State Finals match being recognized as a tie.
In 2009, the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) ruled that Horus Madrid (Camden) and Matt Jones (Travelers Rest) were officially co-champions at 130 pounds in Class 3A after a protest.
