Coaches, I have seen several emails about tournaments and just wanted to make sure all were working on the same timeline for events.2019-20 is a fall back year in the HSL sports Calendar. You can find these dates on the HSL website... however here are some important for wrestling.
Nov. 4- first day of practice
November 23- first date you can do a preseason date

LAS VEGAS, NV. – The Citadel wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Cliff Keen Invitational this Saturday.Sawyer Root led the Bulldogs after going 4-2 on the weekend and defeating two top-ten ranked opponents. Root began the invitational by dropping a decision to number four ranked seed Stephen Loiseau of Drexel. Root would battle back to defeat No. 3 ranked Corey Giego of Oregon State with a decision of 4-0. He then won back-to-back matches, including defeating No. 8 ranked Jake Woodley of Oklahoma with a 6-1 decision. Root finished the second day of competition one spot out of placing.
"The competition in this tournament was very high quality. On the first day, we dropped matches but they came at the hands of ranked opponents which eventually went on to place in the final standings. We are proud of the way that Sawyer battled back to pull off some huge upsets and we will continue to grow from here," said head coach Rob Hjerling.
In the first round of consolations the Bulldogs earned victories in the 165, 197 and 285 weight classes.
165 - Dazjon Casto – MD (15-5) over Macoy Flanagan of Northern Colorado
197 – Sawyer Root – DEC (4-0) over Corey Griego (3) of Oregon State
285 – Michael McAleavey – DEC (3-2) over Omar Haddad of Hoffstra
The Citadel wrestling team will have a break until Dec. 20 when they travel back to Nevada to participate in the Reno Tournament of Champions.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Three Citadel Bulldogs finished in the top five while competing in the 2018 Wolfpack Club Open on Sunday, Nov. 18 in Raleigh, North Carolina on the campus of N.C. State.157- Rian Burris took third place in his division after going 5-1 on the day. In his first bout, Burris defeated Ryan Yorkdale of George Mason by a pin in 4:47. He would go on to win two-consecutive matches with a major decision over Newberry and an 8-3 decision over Campbell's, Zachary Barnes. His only loss of the day came at the hands of Justin McCoy of the University of Virginia. In the third place match, Burris took the victory after an 11-7 decision over Adam Whitesell of Maryland.
197- Sawyer Root was the top finisher for The Citadel, placing second in the 197 bracket. Root went 3-1 on the day, suffering his only loss in the final bout to take the runner-up spot. All three of his victories came by decision, taking one from conference opponent Rodney Jones of Chattanooga. His other wins came at the mercy of UNC Chapel Hill and Old Dominion.
285- In the heavyweight bracket, Michael McAleavey fought back after dropping his first bout to take fifth place in his division. McAleavey garnered decisions against ODU, Newberry and a pair of conference opponents in Gardner-Webb and Davidson.

TROY, N.Y. – The Citadel wrestling team closed out the 2018 Journeymen Northeast Duals on Sunday, Nov. 11 in Troy, New York.On the first day of competition, the Bulldogs dropped two duals by only two points before losing their final match to Drexel.
Dual Against Edinboro (Citadel 17, Edinboro 19)
Jake Rotunda picked up the first victory for the team in the 133-pound weight class with a 15-9 decision.
Rian Burris claimed another win with a 7-5 decision in a match up at 157.
Dazjon Casto recorded his first win as a Bulldog with a major decision finishing with a score of 17-6.
Sawyer Root and Michael McAleavey rounded out the dual with victories over their opponents at 197 and heavyweight, respectively.
Dual Against Sacred Heart (Citadel 22, Sacred Heart 24)
Chon Porter and Casto picked up 12 points combined for The Citadel after recording pins against Sacred Heart.
Root would record his second win of the day with a major decision against Fredericks of SHU.
Burris and McAleavey also picked up their second consecutive win on the day with decisions at 157 and heavyweight.
The Bulldogs would drop their third and final dual against Drexel after the Dragons recorded wins in all weight classes.
On the second day of competition, The Citadel wrestling team competed as individuals.
133- Paddy Kearney finished in third place in the 133C bracket after going 3-2 on the day. Kearney took his victories by a fall and decision.
149- Chon Porter went 3-2 on the day and would take third place in the 149D bracket after recording a pin in his second match.
Kearney and Porter were the top performers for the Bulldogs in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic.

Lander Wrestling adds six more to inaugural recruiting classNov 29, 2018
GREENWOOD – The Lander wrestling program will add six more freshmen to its first incoming recruiting class, head coach R.C. LaHaye has announced.
"This group of student-athletes represents some of the best wrestlers not only locally, but nationally," said LaHaye. "I am extremely excited to add this group of future Bearcats to our program. This group represents not just great wrestlers, but great student-athletes who want to join the culture that we are building here at Lander. I am also excited to welcome three student-athletes from our home state of South Carolina to the Bearcat family. The past few years, some of the best local athletes have been headed out of state to compete. We want to be a home for the best kids in South Carolina."

Lander unveils first wrestling signing class, featuring 10 signeesNov 15, 2018
GREENWOOD – The Lander wrestling program celebrated its first National Signing Day with 10 student-athletes in its first recruiting class that will begin competing in the 2019-20 school year.
"I am very excited for the first crop of recruits in Lander wrestling history," said head coach RC LaHaye. "We have searched nationwide to find the best student-athletes possible to lay the foundation for the Bearcat wrestling program and I believe we have found them. The future for Lander wrestling looks very bright. As excited as we are about this first group, we are still recruiting hard all the way through the spring of 2019 and are still looking for student-athletes who want to be a part of something special as we build the Lander wrestling program."

R.C. LaHaye named Bearcats' head wrestling coachJul 02, 2018
GREENWOOD – Lander has tabbed its first wrestling coach as athletics director Brian Reese announced the hiring of R.C. LaHaye on Tuesday.
LaHaye brings to Lander an impressive career both as a competitor and coach. LaHaye spent the past four seasons as the associate head coach at Newberry after serving as the first head coach for Grand Canyon's wrestling program for seven years.
"Today starts a new chapter for Lander Athletics with the hiring of R.C. LaHaye as our first head wrestling coach," said Reese. "Coach LaHaye brings a deep understanding of the sport and a passion for leading young men. This hire should give Bearcat fans great confidence that bright days are ahead for Lander wrestling."
"I would like the thank Brian Reese and President Consentino for the opportunity to start the wrestling program at Lander," LaHaye said. "I couldn't be more excited to hit the ground running and start recruiting the first crop of Bearcat wrestlers."
LaHaye played a key role in developing Newberry into a championship contender, helping lead the Wolves to three ECAC championships and an NCAA Super Region Championship in four seasons. Newberry went 41-14 in dual matches during LaHaye's tenure.
Prior to arriving at Newberry, LaHaye built the Grand Canyon wrestling program into a national powerhouse. In 2013, LaHaye had the nation's best wrestler in NCAA Division II Wrestler of the Year, Tyrell Fortune, who became the Antelopes fourth national champion in three seasons. GCU finished ninth in the team standings, its third straight top-10 finish. Mike Hamel earned NCAA II All-America status. LaHaye has coached 13 NCAA All-Americans. Along with the high marks on the mat, Kyle McCrite, who won a national title in 2012, was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Wrestler of the Year.
In 2012, GCU had two national champions and finished third overall. Along with McCrite, Victor Carazo took the top spot at 174. Two other wrestlers, Bobby Ward and Celic Bell, earned All-America honors. The season also saw the team set a new school mark for dual meet victories with 19.
In its final four seasons in Division II, GCU compiled a 62-23 dual meet record. LaHaye also excelled as a recruiter at Grand Canyon, compiling a pair of top-five classes in 2011 and 2012.
The Antelopes finished seventh in the NCAA Division II championships in 2011, taking seven wrestlers to nationals that year, another program-best. The team also won the 2011 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season championship. The team finished 17-4 in duals -- second most wins in the nation -- and won the final 14 head-to-head battles.
LaHaye had a decorated wrestling career at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. At Western State, he was a 2004 NCAA Division II All-American. He was also a three-time NCAA Academic All-American, three-time NCAA National Qualifier, three-time All-Rocky Mountain Athletic selection, as well as a Colorado Collegiate Champion. He was a member of the 2004 Western State squad that finished fourth in the nation.
Born and raised in Payson, Ariz., LaHaye wrestled for Payson High School under Hall of Fame coaches Dennis Pirch and Dave Lamotte. He was a three-time state champion and set a state record for career wins. LaHaye was a two-time High School All-American and team captain for three state championship teams.
LaHaye received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Adminstration from Western State College in 2005 and a Masters of Science in Leadership from Grand Canyon University in 2010.

Lander Athletics announces addition of men's wrestling programMay 29, 2018
GREENWOOD – Lander Athletics today unveiled a plan to add a men's wrestling program to the athletic department.
Lander will become just the fourth NCAA Division II wrestling program in the state and will begin competition during the 2019-20 academic year.
"This is thrilling news for Lander as we continue to elevate and grow our athletics program," said athletics director Brian Reese. "Men's wrestling will bring an added element to our overall student-athlete experience and will give us another opportunity to field a progam that can compete at a championship level."
Lander will begin the process of seeking the program's first head coach with a national search that will conclude by July 1.

Sunday, September 2nd - wrestling clinic in Columbia, SC with former Olympic wrestler Ike Anderson.1988 Greco-Roman Olympic wrestler Ike Anderson, from Lower Richland H.S. in Columbia, will be at the Warrior Warehouse 7230-A Middle Street Columbia, SC on Sunday September 2nd from 3pm-5pm to do a free wrestling clinic before he goes to coach at Senior Worlds. The Warrior Warehouse is located off Two Notch Road across the street from the Pizza Hut and behind Sue Beauty.
Anderson was 6th at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea in Greco-Roman wrestling (62 kg). Anderson won three U.S. National titles in Greco-Roman wrestling, was a national runner-up four times, and took silver at 62 kg at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba.
Anderson attended Appalachian State University where he qualified for the NCAA Championships and earned degrees in recreation and physical education.

March 15, 2018HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College is pleased to announce the hiring of Derrick Nelson as the Cobras' head wrestling coach, Dr. Lynn Griffin, vice president of athletics and athletic facilities announced today. Nelson returns to Coker after competing for the Cobra wrestling team from 2014-16. In addition, Nelson earned his bachelor's and Master's degrees from Coker College. Nelson is the third head coach in program history.
"We are excited to have Derrick at the helm of the wrestling program," said Griffin. "Derrick brings the recruiting and wrestling experience to the program that will aid him in continuing to build upon the strong foundation of Coker wrestling. I look forward to watching the program flourish under his direction."
Nelson returns to Coker after serving as the assistant coach at King University this past season. While at King, Nelson was involved in all phases of the wrestling program including conditioning, strength training, practice planning, and recruiting. His time at King was highlighted by coaching two All-Americans this past season at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Before King, Nelson had a brief stint at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., where he was the interim head coach. In the first year of the program, Nelson helped Northeastern finish in the top 25 of the national tournament as three Plainsmen qualified for the national tournament. Northeastern finished with one All-American and three academic All-Americans.
"I first want to thank my parents, Dave and Heidi for dragging me all over the country to wrestle," said Nelson. "I would like to thank my sister Ali for being my biggest fan in my career. I want to thank Dr. Griffin, President Wyatt and the whole Coker Athletics Department for believing in me to do this job. Finally, I want to say it feels great to be back home at Coker, leading the team and school that has done so much for me."
Prior to coaching at Northeastern, Nelson was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Coker College where he helped with the recruitment of student-athletes. While wrestling at Coker, Nelson ranked in the top 10 of NCAA Division II in the 2015-16 season while being selected All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and earning academic All-America honors.
Before arriving at Coker as a student-athlete, Nelson wrestled for the University of Pittsburgh where he was a 2013 Varsity Letterman and an Eastern Wrestling League Freshman All-Academic selection. In high school, Nelson was a two-time PIAA state wrestling place winner at Waynesburg High School, located in Waynesburg, Pa.
As mentioned, Nelson graduated with his Bachelor of Art-History from Coker and also earned his Master of Science in Athletic Administration from Coker.

Sunday December 3 at Rock Hill High School
320 W Springdale Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29730
1. This is an all girl wrestling tournament.
2. Must have a USA Wrestling Card -
can be purchased online at https://www.usawmembership.com/register
3. Age groups preK - 12th grade
4. Weigh-ins from 8:00 am to 9:30 am
5. Weights and age will be grouped to max bouts.
6. Clinic from 9:30 am til 10:30 am
7. Wrestling will begin after clinic.
8. Register and Pay on site.
9. Registration is $15 and spectater entry is $5.
10. Concessions will be available
11. Top 3 placers get medals.
12. Uniforms - singlets are preferred but not necessary
13. Head Gear is required.
14. Must weigh-in in uniform (what you will wrestle in)

The SC North South all star event is one of the longest consecutively running all star wrestling events in the country. The event will be held from March 1-3, 2018 at North Myrtle Beach High School.North

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College wrestling team had two members named to the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team for the 2016-17 season, the association announced today. Walker Barfield earned second team honors, while Jordon Garlow was named to the Honorable Mention team.Walker Barfield earned All-Academic second team honors with an outstanding 4.0 GPA. The senior business administration major finished with a 1-3 record this season and was the only wrestler named to the All-Academic teams who accumulated a 4.0 GPA. Barfield is a native of Lexington, S.C. and is the son of Ben and Julie Barfield.
Jordon Garlow was named to the All-Academic honorable mention team with a 3.10 GPA. The junior business administration major finished the season with a 10-10 record and was second on the team in pins with six. Garlow is a native of Smithfield, Va. and is the son of George and Barbara Garlow.
The 2016-2017 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 186 student-athletes from 47 universities and colleges. Thirty-eight members were named to the first team, 62 members to the second team, and 86 were named as honorable mention. In order for a student-athlete to be nominated to the Division II All-Academic Team, he needed to have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. He must also be in at least his second full year at his school, be a varsity member on his team or a key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation (academic advisor and coach) submitted on his behalf.
