OHIO TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS AIMS FOR WORLD RECORD

March 20, 2012...Columbus, OH......YOU can be a part of wrestling history, as The Ohio Tournament
of Champions aims to set a new World Record, with 4000 individual entries. This year's event,
scheduled for April 21 at the Columbus Convention Center, in Columbus, OH, will mark the TofC's 20th
Anniversary. Already, entries from 22 states, and as far away as California, have been received and
submissions have been entered from several others (registered but not paid yet).
According to Event Chairman Bart Freidenberg, the entries are coming in better than the past few years.
"There are so many national level events that kids can do these days, that people now tend to wait to
the last minute to enter any of them," Freidenberg said. "Still, we are ahead of where we have been
the past several years. Plus, we already have at least 100 more wrestlers that are part of large groups
that won't show up as accepted until the group administrator pays for the entire team."
"I'm starting to hear from several more groups that are planning on coming and just wanted to know
how to do the group registration process," said Freidenberg, adding that recent groups contacting
him have come from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Hawaii.He also added that submissions (those
who have entered individually, and have not yet paid) are also way ahead of past years as well, and
include wrestlers from at least 10 additional states not already represented.
The TofC has always been known for the quality of the wrestlers competing and that was proved at
this weekend's NCAA Division I National Championships, as eight of the champions, and four of the
runner ups, were past TofC competitors.

"Right after Kyle Dake won the NCAA's this year, I messaged his dad and told him that we
would love to have Kyle as guest at our 2013 event (college wrestlers cannot appear until
after they have used up their collegiate eligibility)," Freidenberg said. "He messaged back
and said that he would let Kyle know, but also said that he had recently been looking at some
of our past programs and that they were like a "who's who of college wrestling."
***Dake wrestled at the Ohio TofC several years. According to past results, he placed four times,
with his lone Championship coming in 2005, at Schoolboy 92. In other years, he placed 4th in 2002,
at Junior 73 (Collin Palmer, from Ohio took first and future NCAA Champion Jordan Oliver took second);
4th in 2003 at Junior 80 (Trey Adamson, of NM took first); and 6th in 2004, at Schoolboy 84
(NCAA Champion David Taylor took first).

*TofC top 8 (past two years)
*All High School Wrestlers
*All Cadet Wrestlers (those born in 1997 or earlier)

*Any wrestler with 10+ match wins this season (includes open tournaments)
*Top 6 at any National Level event (past 2 years)
*Top 4 at any state or regional event (past 2 years)
*Top 3 at any League Championship (past 2 years)
*Champion at ANY Tournament (other than those specifically for beginners) this season
*Top 3/4 at any Official Ohio TofC Qualifier
*Any wrestler that has qualified for their State Youth Tournament that has a qualification process
*Wrestlers who resides in a state with no qualifiers, or that lives more than 50 miles from the
nearest qualifying event.
Groups entering 8 or more wrestlers are also eligible for a Group/Team Discount this year.
However, one individual needs to enter all of the wrestlers in, under one user name/password,

BJ Young national runner-up at 141 lbs.; Wolves finish in fifth place at NCAA Tournament

PUEBLO, Colo. - BJ Young's national runner-up finish at 141 lbs. highlighted Newberry College's
fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Tournament on Saturday night.
The Wolves finished with 46.0 team points. Nebraska-Kearney earned the national championship with
107 points, while St. Cloud State was runner-up with 95 points. Grand Canyon and Findlay tied for
third with 58 points, with Newberry in fifth. Upper Iowa and Wisconsin-Parkside tied for sixth at
45.5 points in a field which was tightly contested following the top two teams.
The fifth place finish marks the second-highest team finish in the school's history and the fifth
consecutive year in the top eight of the nation.

Young earned national runner-up honors for the second consecutive season after a second place
finish at 133 lbs. in 2011. He advanced to the championship match with a 7-2 win by decision
over Trevor Johnson from the University of Mary. The bout was tied 2-2 after one period but
Young escaped from the down position and earned a takedown in the second period to take the
lead and clinched the finals appearance with a third period takedown.
Unfortunately for Young, the championship bout did not go as well. After trailing 2-1 entering
the second period, Young chose the down position in an attempt to escape and tie the bout.
However, Nebraska-Kearney's Dalton Jensen used the top position to tilt Young into a pin at
the 4:18 mark and hand Young second place.
Young completes his season with a 36-10 record and is 70-25 in just two seasons, on pace to
challenge Bryant Blanton for the school's all-time wins mark. His 36 victories this season ties
for the fifth most in a season in program history.
Newberry's other three All-Americans also had solid days from the wrestleback brackets as Taylor
Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished fourth at 157 lbs., Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) finished sixth
at 174 lbs. and Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) finished seventh at heavyweight.
Knapp started his day with a 10-6 decision over Limestone's Jeremy Bommarito to move on to the
consolation semifinals. In that round, Knapp faced off with Ouachita Baptist's Bobby Williams,
who had defeated Knapp by one point in the first round Friday. Knapp earned his revenge and moved
on to the third place match with a win by pinfall at the 1:01 mark.
In the third place match, Knapp was defeated by a 5-2 decision to Wisconsin-Parkside's Dillon Bera,
with a Bera takedown in the first period and a point for riding time at the end of the bout providing
the final difference.
Knapp completes his first season at Newberry with a 24-11 record with two more seasons to wrestle
for the Wolves.
Sheehy started his day off in the championship semifinals, where he ran into Grand Canyon's Victor
Carazo who would go on to claim the national title in his weight class. Carazo had defeated Sheehy
by a 7-2 decision in the Grand Canyon Duals on New Year's Eve, and did so again by the same score
in the semis.
In the consolation semifinals, Sheehy was the tough luck loser, as he was hit with two stalling calls
in the third period, giving Western State's Elliot Copeland a penalty point with 24 seconds left.
Copeland took Sheehy down with 20 seconds left and only Sheehy's point for riding time sent the bout
to overtime. In 30 seconds, Copeland took Sheehy down again to send him to the fifth place match.
In that match, Sheehy was handed sixth place after Findlay's Michael Lybarger pinned him in the first
period.
Sheehy completes his first season at Newberry with a 36-12 record, tying Young for the fifth-most
wins in a season in the school's history.
Elkins started off in the third consolation round, and was defeated by a 4-0 decision by Upper
Iowa's Zach Rosol to send him to the seventh-place bout.
Elkins went into overtime for the third of his five bouts at nationals, but in the third overtime
period against West Liberty's JD Ramsey, the senior quickly escaped and earned a takedown and a
three-point nearfall to earn an 8-3 decision.
Elkins finished his senior season with a 26-8 record and two consecutive All-American honors and
a career record of 76-30.
The future is still bright for the Wolves despite the loss of five senior starters including two-time
All-American Elkins, four-time national qualifier Matt Oliver, two-time national qualifiers Zach Anderson
and Sean Byrnes and this year's national qualifier at 125 lbs. in Jon Cronin.
Returning for the Wolves in 2012-13 are two-time national runner-up BJ Young, 2012 All-Americans
Taylor Knapp and Travis Sheehy and Deral Brown and Mitch Brown, who should be national contenders
once again despite seeing their seasons come to an early end at the regional tournament.

Scanlan Caps Impressive Career with a Runner-Up Finish at Nationals; Magaha and Bommarito Earn All-American

PUEBLO, COLO. – Senior Dan Scanlan (Leesburg, Va.) finished his Limestone career with a runner-up
finish in the 197-pound weight class on Saturday, March 10 at Massari Arena on the campus of CSU-Pueblo.
Scanlan, the 2008 National Champion at 184-pounds, gave the crowd a thrilling championship match,
but fell in sudden death overtime.
Scanlan began his day with a complete domination of No. 8 Shane Nolan of UNC Pembroke. He started
off with a trio of three-point near falls, one two-point near fall and a takedown to take a 13-0 lead
after the first period. After taking the bottom position to start period two, Scanlan pulled of an
escape and a takedown and earned another point for riding time to get a 17-0 technical fall victory.
In the championship bout, Scanlan jumped out to an early 7-4 lead over Adams State's No. 4 Luke McPeek
in the opening period. In fact, he nearly ended the bout midway through the frame as he had McPeek in
a near pin attempt, but he battled back to stay alive.
The second period was a nip-and-tuck affair with Scanlan outpointing McPeek, 5-4, with two takedowns
and an escape, but a late takedown from McPeek with almost no time remaining gave him life.
McPeek took over in the final period as he earned an escape and takedown to narrow the bout to 12-11.
Then, with only 41 second remaining, Scanlan was called for his second stalling call of the match and
a penalty point was given to McPeek to force the match into overtime.
In overtime, Scanlan was the early aggressor as he took a nice shot at McPeek legs and appeared to
have taken over the period, but McPeek was able to wiggle out of his grip and earn a reversal to win
the championship match, 14-12. Scanlan finishes the season with an 18-1 record and finishes his career
as the most decorated wrestler in program history.
In other action Limestone action, junior No. 6 Mike Magaha (Seaford, Del.) capped off his second
All-American nod by placing sixth in the 133-pound bracket. He started off day two with a come from
behind victory over Southwest Minnesota State's Justin Reinsma. Trailing 3-2 with only 22 seconds
remaining in the match, Magaha pulls off a reversal of Reinsma to get a thrilling 4-3 victory.
The win guaranteed him no worse than a fifth-place finish overall and that is exactly where he
finished as dropped his next two contests. He just missed out finishing in the fourth overall as
No. 4 Ryan Fillingame edged him by the painfully narrow score of 2-1. The loss dropped him to the
seventh-place match and a showdown with No. 2 Jason Jeremiason of Augustana. Magaha gave Jeremiason
all he could handle but wasn't quite able to pull off the win as he fell 4-1.
Junior No. 5 Jeremy Bommarito finished off his first season in a Limestone singlet with an eighth
place finish in the 157-pound bracket. He started the second day off with highly contested defeat
to Newberry's Taylor Knapp. Bommarito got off to a good start, but Knapp always seemed to be one
step ahead as he earned a 10-6 decision.
In the seventh-place bout he faced Zachary Lundgren of Pittsburgh-Johnstown for the second time.
Bommarito originally defeated Lundgren in 3-1 OT thriller in his opening match of the bracket,
but this time Lundgren pulled off the upset and won 12-7.
Limestone finishes the season with a program record three wrestlers earning All-American honors.
The program also achieved its highest ranking ever at No. 10 earlier this season, and with Magaha,
Bommarito and junior national qualifier Kenneth Kampnich (Watertown, N.Y.) returning they are poised
for more accomplishments in the future.

EDMOND, Okla. - The Newberry College wrestling team will head to Pueblo, Colo., and the NCAA
Division II National Tournament as the second-ranked team in the nation, as announced by the
national coaches' association Tuesday. Three of the Wolves' national qualifiers are ranked in
the top eight of their weight class.
For the fifth straight poll, Super Region III champion St. Cloud State is the unanimous No. 1 team.
Newberry is No. 2 as the Super Region I champion, while Super Region IV champion Nebraska-Kearney
is third. Super Region III runner-up Upper Iowa is fourth and Super Region II champion Central
Oklahoma is fifth.

Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) remains at No. 3 in the rankings at the heavyweight class after
cruising to the regional title with two pins and a major decision with a 4-0 record in the tournament.
The senior will look for his second consecutive All-American honor in Pueblo and is slated to face
Grand Canyon's Jordan Johnson in the first round. Johnson won a 4-3 decision on New Year's Eve in
Phoenix in the two teams' dual earlier this season.
BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) stays at No. 4 in the national rankings in the 141 lbs. weight class after
earning his regional crown with three bonus point wins on the way to his 4-0 record. Young was the
2011 Division II national runner-up at 133 lbs. and will look for his second career All-American
honor, starting his tournament against Newman's Mitch Arnold.
Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) at 174 lbs. remained at No. 7 in this week's national rankings after
a 3-0 regional tournament. The UNC Greensboro transfer went 3-0 after a first round bye at the
regional tournament and will face a hostile environment in his first round bout at nationals as
he faces Trevor Grant of the host institution, Colorado State-Pueblo.
Newberry's other four national qualifiers are not ranked in the top eight individually, but now
know their path towards All-American status and a national championship.
Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) at 125 lbs. is in his first national tournament and faces Grand Canyon's
Kyle McCrite in the first round. Cronin comes off of a third place finish at the regional tournament
with a 4-1 record and faces the fourth-ranked wrestler in his class.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) at 133 lbs. looks for his second career All-American honor in his
fourth career national tournament. Oliver went 3-1 on the way to regional runner-up honors and
faces Ashland's eighth-ranked Adli Edwards in his first bout in Pueblo.
At 157 lbs., Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is coming off of a fourth-place finish at regionals
and will face off against Ouachita Baptist's third-ranked Bobby Williams in the first round.
Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) appears in his second career national tournament at 197 lbs. after
finishing third at regionals. He faces a tough test in his first round bout against St. Cloud State's
fifth-ranked Luke Munklewitz.

Newberry claims fifth straight Super Region title; Wolves send seven wrestlers to National Tournament

PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Newberry College Wolves wrestling team earned the Super Region I championship
for the fifth consecutive season with 131 team points, sending seven wrestlers to the 2012 NCAA
Division II National Tournament.
The Wolves cruised to the team title with eight of 10 wrestlers finishing in the top five with
three individual champions - BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) at 141 lbs., Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.)
at 174 lbs. and Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) at heavyweight. The national tournament takes
place on March 10-11 at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Young had one of the most dominant runs of the tournament. After two bonus point wins Friday,
he notched a first period pinfall over fifth-seed Aaron Smith of American International in the
semifinals. In the championship bout, Young battled to a 3-2 win by decision over UNC Pembroke's
sixth-seeded Daniel Ownbey to claim his first region title and advance to the NCAA Tournament for
the second season. He was the 2011 national runner-up at 133 lbs.
Sheehy had cruised to the semifinals with a bye and a quarterfinal minute pin. In the semifinals,
he earned a 13-5 major decision over fifth-seeded Matt Littleton of West Liberty. His 11-4 win by
decision over sixth-seeded Brendan McKeown of East Stroudsburg gave the UNC Greensboro transfer
his first regional championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Elkins had two bonus point wins on Friday night and went to the finals with a first period pinfall
over American International's Matt Pringle. In the championship bout, Elkins claimed his first
regional title with a 2-1 decision over Mercyhurst's Fred Hale. Elkins advances to his second national
tournament after claiming All-American honors with a seventh place national finish in 2011.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) qualified for his fourth career NCAA National Tournament appearance
with a regional runner-up performance at 133 lbs. Oliver advanced to the championship match with
a 5-3 win by decision in the first tiebreak period over fifth-seeded Kody Young of Mercyhurst.
He dropped a 9-5 decision to second-seeded Evan Yenelovich of Kutztown in the championship match.
Oliver qualified for his previous national tournaments at 125 lbs., finishing in third place in 2009.
Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) qualified for his first career NCAA National Tournament appearance
with a third place finish at 125 lbs. The senior started the day out with a 3:30 pinfall over
Anderson's Cory Monteforte and then squeaked out an 11-9 decision over sixth-seeded Desmond Moore
of Kutztown to advance to the third place match. He wasted little time earning his nationals berth,
pinning third-seeded Ryan Bohince of Mercyhurst in just 2:54.
Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) had a tougher road to Pueblo. The third-seeded wrestler at 197 lbs.
lost to UNC Pembroke's second-seeded Shane Nolan by a 3-1 sudden victory in the championship semifinals.
In the wrestleback bracket, he earned a 4-2 decision over fifth-seeded Michael Pollard of Mercyhurst
to advance to the third place bout. He earned his second career NCAA National Tournament berth with
a 2-1 decision in the second tiebreaker period over fourth-seeded Jon Moore of Pitt-Johnstown.
Anderson previousl qualified for the national tournament in 2009 as a wrestler at Anderson University.
Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) advances to his first NCAA National Tournament with a fourth-place
finish at 157 lbs. He fell out of the championship bracket with a 4-3 loss by decision to sixth-seeded
Braden Turner of East Stroudsburg. He advanced to the third-place bout with a 12-1 major decision over
fifth-seeded Bionojel Candelaria of Kutztown, but was pinned in the second period at the hands of
Pitt-Johnstown's Zach Lundgren.
Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) saw his magical season come to an end with a fifth place finish. In the
semifinals, he lost in the first tiebreaker period to Anderson's Dan Telhada, marking his first loss
to a Division II wrestler this season. In the consolation semifinals, he was pinned in just 19 seconds
by sixth-seeded Kenny Stank of Shippensburg. he rebounded with a 7-4 win by decision over seventh-seeded
Chriss Hoffman of American International, but Stank fell in the third-place bout, denying Brown a
chance at a challenge for a true fourth match.
Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) saw his shot at a third straight national tournament appearance, this
time at 165 lbs., cut short with a 7-2 loss by decision Robert Blotzer of Gannon.
Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) at 184 lbs. had a tough test in his elimination match, and was defeated
by second-seeded Zach Benzio of Seton Hill to see his tournament come to an end.

Brackets released for 2012 Super Region I Tournament

PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves' path to a fifth straight Super Region I Tournament victory
has become clearer, as the official brackets for the tournament have been released. The tournament
will take place in three sessions over Friday, February 24, and Saturday, February 25, at
UNC Pembroke's English Jones Center.
The top four finishers in each weight class at this weekend's regional tournament will advance
to the NCAA Division II National Tournament in Pueblo, Colo., on March 10-11.
Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been seeded fourth at 125 lbs. and will receive a bye into the
quarterfinals, where he will face the winner of Gannon's Matt Turek - seeded fifth - and UNC Pembroke's
JD Baker. Cronin has not faced either wrestler this season. He is 1-0 vs. wrestlers in his bracket
with a win over Anderson's Cory Monteforte.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) is the top-seeded wrestler at the 133 lbs. class and will wrestle
Ohio Valley's Josue Rodriguez in the first round. Oliver has not faced any of the wrestlers in his
bracket this season.
BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) is the top-seeded wrestler in the 141 lbs. weight class, and the No. 4-ranked
wrestler in the country will look to roll past his opposition. He opens in the first round against
Anderson's Ian Harper, who Young pinned in the first period of the season finale. Young has seen five
of his potential opponents in the bracket and defeated them all this season.
Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) will look for his 100th career victory in the opening round of the 149 lbs.
class, where he is the top seed. He will face East Stroudsburg's Andrew Ritchie in the opener, with
the winner facing eighth-seeded Christopher Robbins of Ohio Valley, who received a first round bye.
Brown has only two Division II losses this season, with four wins in four tries against potential
opponents.
Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is the second seed in the 157 lbs. weight class and sees American
International's Jeffrey Cole in the opener, with the winner getting seventh-seeded Sam Brehm of Gannon
in the quarterfinals. Knapp is 1-0 against wrestlers in his bracket.
Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) has a tougher road to nationals at 165 lbs. as the third seed, facing
Ohio Valley's Kenneth Colbey Richards in the opening round. The winner gets sixth-seeded Neil Grudi
of Shippensburg, who Byrnes pinned at the Super Region Duals in January. Byrnes is 1-1 against wrestlers
in this bracket, with the only loss coming to the top seed.
Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) is the top seed at 174 lbs. and earned a bye to the quarterfinals.
He will face the winner of eighth-seeded Randall Wagner of Seton Hill and American International's
Vladimir Bereshchenko. He is 3-0 against his potential opponents in the class.
Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) is the third seed in the 184 lbs. class and will face Ohio Valley's Justin
Smith in the first round. The winner will get sixth-seeded Derrick Williams of West Liberty in the
quarterfinals. Brown is 0-2 against potential opponents, with both losses coming in overtime.
Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) is seeded third at 197 lbs. and faces off against Anderson's Jordan
Denmark in the first round. Zach Anderson earned a 10-5 decision over Denmark in the season finale.
The winner gets sixth-seeded Chris Boyd of Gannon in the quarterfinals. Anderson is 2-1 this year
against potential opponents, with the only loss coming in the sudden victory period.
It's no surprise that 2011 All-American Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) is the top seed in the
heavyweight class, where he will face East Stroudsburg's Joe Blaes in the opening round. The winner
gets eighth-seeded Chaz Lear of Gannon in the quarterfinals. Elkins is 4-1 against his potential
opponents in Pembroke.
The tournament begins at 4 p.m. Friday in UNCP's English Jones Center.

Wolves enter Super Region I Tournament with top regional ranking

ERIE, Pa. - The Newberry Wolves' wrestling team will enter the Super Region I Tournament this
weekend as favorites to pick up their fifth consecutive regional championship, as Newberry is
ranked as the top team in the region in the final rankings of the season.
Newberry has a wrestler ranked in the top three of every weight class, with the top four finishers
at this weekend's regional tournament in Pembroke, N.C., advancing to the NCAA Division II National
Tournament next month. The Wolves are the only team in the region with a wreslter ranked in the
top six in all 10 weight classes.
Four Wolves are at the top spot in their weight class, with BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.; 29-9) at
141 lbs. and Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.; 31-9) at 174 lbs. retaining their top rank from the
previous poll. Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.; 34-6) at 149 lbs. and Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.; 18-4)
at heavyweight moved up from the No. 2 spot in the previous poll and are favorites at this weekend's
tournament.
Two Newberry wrestlers are ranked second in the region in their weight class, with senior Matt Oliver
(Toms River, N.J.; 15-11) at 133 lbs. holding steady and Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.; 16-7)
at 157 lbs. jumping up one spot.
The remaining four Wolves are in the third spot in their weight class. Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.; 16-5)
makes his debut in the 125 lbs. class, while Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.; 17-6) at 165 lbs. and

The Ohio Tournament of Champions, scheduled for April 21, at the Columbus Convention Center, in Columbus, OH, has been called one of the top youth wrestling tournaments in the country. Many feel it is toughest, even more so than Tulsa and Reno. This year, the tournament is out to set a new World Record, with 4000 entries.
According to Tournament Chairman Bart Freidenberg there is a good possibility of reaching that mark. "Right now, we are more than double the entries we were at this time last year," Freidenberg said, "so it's just a matter if we can keep that pace. I know our submissions (those who have entered info into the system, but have not yet paid) are also way ahead."
Freidenberg added that several clubs and teams have already set up club accounts, in order to get a group (8 or more) discount. He said that since they have to pay at one time, those entries would not show up as accepted until the entire group pays. "Right now, we have at least another 50 or so wrestlers in this situation that would probably be on the accepted list by now. So far, we are very pleased how the registration is going."
The Ohio TofC event, now in its 20th year, has long been recognized for it's quality of competition. Looking over the list of former champions and place winners is staggering, with names like:

"Last year, seven of the ten NCAA Division I champions were former TofC participants," said Freidenberg, "including Jon Reader, who won our event a record 10 times. Jon told me that our event was definitely his favorite to compete in each year. Each year we will draw from about 30 states, so you never quite know who will be competing, but you always know it will be tough.
"I have had lots of parents tell me that their child has won Tulsa, Reno, Liberty, War at the Shore, or other top-notch events, but that they have never been able to win the Tournament of Champions. I think that speaks to the quality of wrestlers that we get competing. Naturally, we draw the bulk of our wrestlers from Ohio and Pennsylvania, which are generally considered two of the top wrestling states in the country, if not the top. Add to that solid contingents from New Jersey, Michigan and New York and you have a great foundation for a tough event.
"Overall, we will draw from about 30 states each year and our event is basically a blind draw, so you have to be ready each and every match," he said. "You never know what you're going to get when you have a kid coming from a distant state, but you do know they are probably going to be pretty tough, or they wouldn't have made the trip."
As for reaching the 4000 wrestlers mark, Freidenberg said It will be a challenge, but not out of the realm of possibility. "We have drawn as many as 3500 wrestlers before (2005), so we know we can handle that amount and still get things done in one day. The main problem is that there are just so many events out there that call themselves a National Tournament, when they are only drawing 500-1000 wrestlers. They have sort of "diluted" the honor of being called a National Champion. In actuality," he said, "there are probably only a few events that have earned that reputation and I believe that we are definitely one of them."
While there are many ways to qualify for the Ohio TofC, some major ones include: 10+ wins this season - on any level, any high school wrestler, winning a tournament this season, top 3 at any league or youth state event, top 6 at any National level event, top 3 at any TofC qualifier, no TofC qualifier within 50 miles of one's residence, any OAC, OURWAY, Ohio Youth, MYWAY, MSWA, MDWAY, NJ USA Kid's State, NY USA Kid's State, IKWF state qualifier. "We are really expecting a great event this year and are trying our best to get wrestlers from as many states as possible to attend," Freidenberg said. "I have already seen submissions from at least 20 different states, including several from as far away as California. So, things look like we are definitely on the right track. Hopefully our entries continue as they have been going as well. If so, 4000 wrestlers is definitely within reach."

Wolves close out duals season with 46-0 shutout of Anderson
Wrestlers clinch highest winning percentage of any sport at school in NCAA era

ANDERSON, S.C. - The No. 2-ranked Newberry Wolves clinched the highest winning percentage of
any season in the College's NCAA era with a 46-0 thrashing of the Anderson Trojans in the Abney
Center on Wednesday night.
Newberry completes the dual season with a 17-1 record, for a .944 winning percentage. The previous
high since Newberry joined NCAA Division II in 1992-93 was the wrestling program's 23-2 (.920)
season in 2008-09.
The Newberry all-sports record for winning percentage was the 1976-77 men's basketball team,
which went 36-1 for a .973 winning percentage.
In Wednesday night's dual, the Wolves used three bonus point wins to jump out to an early lead.
At 125 lbs., Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) earned an 11-2 major decision over Cory Monteforte,
while Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.) pinned Keenan Simmons in the first period of the 133 lbs.
bout for an early 10-0 lead.
No. 4 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) earned another pin for the Wolves in the second period of the 141 lbs.
bout to move to 29-9 on the season entering the Super Regional tournament.
No. 7 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) completed an undefeated dual season at 149 lbs. with a 7-6 decision
over Dan Telhada to put Newberry up 19-0. Brown went 18-0 in duals this season, and is just the
second wrestler in program history to go undefeated in duals. The other was Cy Wainwright, who
went 36-0 overall on the way to a national championship in 2008-09.
Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) earned a 9-5 decision at 157 lbs. to extend the dual lead to 22-0,
and No. 6 Sean Byrnes' (Jackson, N.J.) 9-0 major decision over Dalton Harper at 165 lbs. made it a
26-0 match.
No. 7 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) earned a 19-2 technical fall over Bryan Glace at 174 lbs. to push
the lead to 31-0 and Travis Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) won by forfeit at 184 lbs. to make it 37-0.
Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) won by 10-5 decision over Jordan Denmark at 197 lbs. in the final action
of the night, as Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) won by forfeit at heavyweight to close out the shutout win.
Newberry will next wrestle at the NCAA Division II Super Region I Tournament in Pembroke, N.C., on
February 24-25. The super regional tournament determines berths for the NCAA Division II National
Tournament in Pueblo, Colo., on March 10-11.

Newberry at No. 2 in national rankings for third straight poll

EDMOND, Okla. - The Newberry Wolves' wrestling team is at No. 2 in the National Wrestling Coaches'
Association Division II poll for the third straight ranking, which was released today.
Five Wolves are in the top eight of their weight class.
Newberry is behind St. Cloud State, which is once again the unanimous No. 1 in the poll.
Newberry received 151 points, which equates to seven second place votes and one third place votes.
BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) holds steady at the No. 4 spot in the 141 lbs. national ranking.
Young is 28-9 overall and ranks first in the Super Region I rankings with pinfalls against
Belmont Abbey and UNC Pembroke since the last national poll.
Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) remains at No. 5 in the heavyweight class in the national rankings.
Elkins pinned his Belmont Abbey opponent and won by decision against UNC Pembroke and also ranks
second in the region with a 17-4 season record.
Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) ranks sixth in the 165 lbs. weight class, which is the same spot as
his previous ranking. He went 1-1 since the last ranking, falling on Tuesday to UNC Pembroke's
Mike Williams, who is now fourth nationally. Byrnes is 16-6 on the year.
Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) moved up one spot to No. 7 in the 149 lbs. weight class. He holds an
undefeated 17-0 duals record and is 33-6 on the season, ranking amongst the most dominant wrestlers
in Division II.
Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) remains at No. 7 in the 174 lbs. weight class. Sheehy is also the
top ranked wrestler in the region and has a 30-9 overall records.
Newberry wraps up the regular season on Wednesday, February 15, at Anderson. The Super Region I
tournament, which determines bids to the NCAA National Tournament, is in Pembroke, N.C., on February 24-25.

No. 2 Wolves takes down UNC Pembroke, 33-9

PEMBROKE, N.C. - The second-ranked Newberry Wolves raced out to an early lead and won seven of
10 bouts in a 33-9 victory over the UNC Pembroke Braves at the English Jones Center to move to
16-1 in dual action this season.
The dual victory ensures the Wolves one of the top two season in program history in terms of
winning percentage. A win in next Wednesday's dual at Anderson will wrap up the top winning
percentage in school history.
Newberry's 16th dual win of the season puts the Wolves in the top seven programs in the nation
regardless of division in terms of dual wins.
The Wolves got off to a 12-0 start thanks to forfeit victories by Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.)
at 125 lbs. and DJ Jules (Greenville, S.C.) at 133 lbs.
No. 4 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) pushed the dual lead to 18-0 at 141 lbs. with a pin of Daniel Ownbey
at the 2:45 mark.
No. 8 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) moved to 17-0 in dual action on the season at 149 lbs. with a 10-4
decision over Kristoff Thomas to make it a 21-0 lead, and Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) earned
a 9-1 major decision over KD Dixon at 157 lbs. to make it a 25-0 lead at the halfway point.
The highlight match of the evening went to the Braves, as No. 4 Mike Williams took a 6-0 decision
over No. 6 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) to narrow the lead to 25-3.
No. 7 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) clinched the dual victory with a 16-1 technical fall over
Jake Ferguson making Newberry's advantage to 30-3.
UNC Pembroke got late wins at 184 and 197 lbs. to narrow the decision. Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.)
took injury time at the end of regulation with the score tied at 1-all, giving choice to Shiheem Bryant.
Bryant took the defensive position and got an escape near the edge in sudden victory to earn a
2-1 decision at 184. A 3-2 tiebreaker victory by UNCP's No. 8 Shane Nolan over Zach Anderson
(Dunwoody, Ga.) cut the lead to 30-9.
No. 5 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) got a late takedown to close out the dual with a 3-1 decision
over James De La Riva.

Wolves atop Super Region I rankings once again
Newberry features one wrestler in top 6 of all 10 weight classes

ERIE, Pa. - The Newberry Wolves once again are the top ranked team in Super Region I, with a
wrestler in the top six of the region in all 10 weight classes. This is Newberry's fifth top
regional ranking this season and have been a consistent front-runner, only dropping from the top spot once since 2008.
Two Wolves hold the top ranking in their class - BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) at 141 lbs. and Travis Sheehy
(Suwanee, Ga.) at 174 lbs. Both wrestlers claimed wins by pinfalls over their Belmont Abbey opposition
in their only action since the last rankings. Young holds a 27-9 record this year, while Sheehy is 29-9
on the season. Both wrestlers were also in the top spot in the previous rankings.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) at 133 lbs., Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) at 149 lbs., Mitch Brown
(Omaha, Neb.) at 184 lbs. and Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) at heavyweight all hold the No. 2
regional ranking in their class. Deral Brown moved to 16-0 in dual action with a major decision
against Belmont Abbey, while Mitch Brown won by decision and Elkins recorded a pinfall.
Oliver did not wrestle vs. Belmont Abbey.
Oliver has a 15-11 record, while Deral Brown is an impressive 32-6. Mitch Brown is 23-5 and Elkins
is 16-4 this season. Oliver, Deral Brown and Mitch Brown hold steady at No. 2, while Elkins fell
from the top spot.
Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) at 125 lbs., Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) at 157 lbs.,
Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) at 165 lbs. and Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) at 197 lbs. are all
ranked in the third spot in their respective weight class.
Byrnes won a 5-0 decision against Belmont Abbey to move to 16-5 on the season, while Anderson
went 3-0 to win the 197 lbs. bracket at the Newberry Open on Saturday to move to 23-6 on the year.
McDonald (10-8) and Knapp (14-7) did not compete since the last rankings.
The Wolves have two more duals before the regional tournament, visiting the No. 9 team in the
region - UNC Pembroke - Tuesday night and visiting 13th-ranked in the region Anderson next
Wednesday. Five UNCP Braves are ranked regionally.

Newberry places eight, claims four championships at 2012 Newberry Open

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves, ranked second nationally in NCAA Division II, had an excellent
showing at the 2012 Newberry Duals in Eleazer Arena on Saturday, claiming four championships and
eight total placements.
Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) at 125 lbs., Seiji Borja (Charleston, S.C.) at 149 lbs., Jared Holliday
(Burlington, N.J.) at 184 lbs. and Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) at 197 lbs. each claimed their weight
class' championship.
The 197 lbs. spot in Newberry's lineup has been in flux all season, and three Wolves went into the
Open in that class - Anderson, Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Joey Grisko (Gloucester Township, N.J.).
All three made the semifinals, with Reed advancing to the finals over Grisko with a 4-0 decision and
Anderson earning a 7-5 decision over Limestone's Zach Tribble. Anderson claimed the championship over
Reed with a 3-2 decision in the first tiebreaker period. Grisko earned third place with a 4-2 decision
over Tribble.
Another bracket highlighted by Newberry wrestlers was at 125 lbs., where starters from the regular
season collided for the bracket title. Both Cronin and Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.) cruised to the
championship bout, where the senior Nevadan claimed the title with a 9-4 decision.
Broja won three bouts to claim the 149 lbs. title easily, while Holliday notched two pins and a major
decision on the way to the 184 lbs. championship including a pin at thr 4:46 mark of the championship
bout over UNC Pembroke's Brach Walker.

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The second ranked Newberry Wolves wrapped up an undefeated season of home duals
on Friday night with a 43-3 walloping of Belmont Abbey, with four wins coming by bonus point victories.
The Wolves celebrated the careers of Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.), Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.),
Channon Clamp (Gilbert, S.C.), Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.), Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.),
Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.), Steven McLeod (Gilbert, S.C.), Dave Newman (Toms River, N.J.),
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) and Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) at the match's halfway point.
Newberry moves to 15-1 in duals this season and hosts the Newberry Open on Saturday.
The Wolves didn't even have to take to the mats to take the lead with Cronin at 125 lbs. and
DJ Jules at 133 lbs. picking up victories by forfeit to give the hosts an early 12-0 lead.
Fourth-ranked BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) pushed the lead to 18-0 at 141 lbs. with a pin of Jake
Nelson at the 1:58 mark.
The No. 8 149 lbs. wrestler in the nation - Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) - moved to an outstanding
16-0 in duals this year with a 12-4 major decision over Nick Sgroi to push the lead to 22-0.
The Abbey took its only bout of the doul with a 4-0 decision by Brandon Wilkins over Hunter
Robinson (Opelika, Ala.) to make it a 22-3 match at the halfway point.
Newberry won the final five bouts of the dual, starting with a 5-0 decision by No. 6 Sean Byrnes
(Jackson, N.J.) over Joseph Maumoynier at 165 lbs. to make the lead 25-3.
No. 7 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) pinned Ryan Gregory at the 2:17 mark of the 174 lbs. bout to
clinch the dual victory at a 31-3 margin. Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) earned a 7-0 decision over
Jerami Bartley at 184 lbs. to push the lead to 34-3.
A pair of seniors closed out their Eleazer Arena careers in perfect fashion, as Reed earned a
7-5 decision over Nick Rees at 197 lbs. and Elkins pinned Will Robinson at the 1:48 mark of the
heavyweight bout to close out the dominating win.

2012 Newberry Open details

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Open, a 10-weight class open tournament featuring wrestlers from
schools around the East Coast, is set for Saturday, February 4.
The Open will begin at 10 a.m. in Eleazer Arena and run for the rest of the day, after skin
checks at 7:40 a.m. and weigh-ins at 8 a.m. The tournament will feature a double-elimination
format with seven-minute matches, plus riding time. If the match is tied, the NCAA overtime
procedure will be used. Outstanding wrestlers will be seeded.
To sign up for the tournament, contact head coach Jason Valek at jason.valek@newberry.edu.
A fee of $30 per wrestler will be charged, which must be paid prior to weigh in. Wrestlers
will not be allowed to weigh in without payment and the entry fee is non-refundable.
The fee can be paid at registration on Friday, February 3, during the Belmont Abbey dual or
Sunday, February 4, at 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
Admission is set at $5 for fans wishing to attend.

Second-ranked Wolves featured in NCAA awards rankings

INDIANAPOLIS - The Newberry College wrestling squad has been on a great streak in dual meets in
preparation for the Super Region meet in February, and several Wolves are featured in the NCAA's
rankings of the most dominant wrestlers.
In the first such ranking of the season, Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) at 149 lbs. and Jake Elkins
(Trussville, Ala.) at heavyweight are ranked fourth and fifth nationally in the "most dominant"
category. St. Cloud State's Tad Merritt leads the rankings.
BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) is tied for sixth in the nation for most pinfalls with 10 such victories
this season, while Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) is tied for 10th nationally for most technical
falls at three.

ERIE, Pa. - Following a 5-0 week with wins over three teams ranked in the top 15 of the nation,
the Newberry Wolves' wrestling team remains the top team in the Super Region I rankings, which
were released today. The Wolves are the only team with a top six wrestler in all 10 weight classes,
with three grapplers earning their weight's top billing.
BJ Young (Jackon, N.J.) at 141 lbs., Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) at 174 lbs and Jake Elkins
(Trussville, Ala.) at heavyweight are each the No. 1 regional wrestler in their class. No wrestler
from Newberry ranks below third in their weight class
Young went 4-0 at the Super Region I Duals last weekend in Johnstown, Pa., including a 13-8 decision
over Pitt-Johnstown's Jack Bachman, who was ranked second in the nation prior to the bout. Sheehy
was also 4-0 at the Super Region I Duals with decisions over the Nos. 2 and 4 wrestlers in today's
rankings. Elkins was 4-1 on the week with three pins and a technical fall win.
Three other Wolves are ranked second in their weight class - Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) at 133 lbs.,
Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) at 149 lbs. and Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.). Brown was the only wrestler of that
trio to wrestle a full slate this week, picking up 5 wins with two pins and two major decisions.
He stands at a stunning 15-0 in dual action this season.

Wednesday's dual at King cancelled

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Wednesday night's Division II wrestling dual between No. 2 Newberry and
No. 15 King has been cancelled and rescheduled for the 2012-13 season. This is primarily due
to the two teams facing off earlier this month at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.
The No. 2 Wolves will next see action at the Appalachian State Open this weekend. The final
home dual of the season will take place on Friday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m. as the Wolves
(14-1) host Belmont Abbey (3-10).

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The No. 2 Newberry Wolves finished an undefeated weekend at the Super Region I Duals with a 29-9 win over the No. 8 Mercyhurst Lakers in the UPJ Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
Newberry moves to 14-1 in duals on the season and defeats its second top 10 opponent in the last five days.
At 125 lbs., Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.) used a series of takedowns and nearfalls in the first and second periods to establish dominance on the way to a 14-5 major decision over Ryan Bohince to stake the Wolves to an early 4-0 lead.
Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) found himself on the wrong end of a sudden victory match at 133 lbs., with Mercyhurst's Kody Young scoring a takedown for a 6-4 victory and narrowing the Wolves' dual lead to 4-3.
Another hotly contested bout came at 141 lbs., with No. 6 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) scoring a takedown nine seconds into the first sudden victory period for a 5-3 decision over Jeremy Landowski to put Newberry's team advantage at 7-3.
No. 8 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) remained undefeated in dual action on the season with a 14-6 major decision over Michael Griffith at 149 lbs. to extend the Newberry lead to 11-3.
Davis Bagwell (Birmingham, Ala.) suffered a 7-0 loss by decision to No. 6 Jordan Shields, narrowing the Wolves' lead to 11-6 at the halfway point of the dual.
No. 6 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) racked up over five minutes of riding time in the 165 lbs. bout on the way to a 9-2 decision over Adam Lamancusa to make it a 14-6 lead.
A quick first period move by No. 7 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) led to a pin at the 2:19 mark of August Mizia to push the lead to 20-6.
Freshman Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) clinched the dual victory for the Wolves at 184 lbs. with a victory by injury default in the first period making it a 26-6 Newberry lead.
After winning by forfeit twice earlier in the day, Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) finally got his chance to wrestle an opponent at 197 lbs. The bout turned out to be the third overtime match of the dual, with Anderson earning a takedown 28 seconds into the first sudden victory for a 3-1 decision which pushed Newberry's lead to 29-6.
Newberry's weekend came to a conclusion with a matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers in the heavy weight division, as No. 4 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) faced off against No. 7 Fred Hale. A Hale reversal with 20 seconds left tied the match, and the Laker claimed a 9-8 decision with the riding time advantage.
The Wolves return to action on Wednesday, January 25, at No. 15 King (Tenn.) College. The rematch of Newberry's 24-6 victory in the quarterfinals of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals will start in Bristol, Tenn., at 7 p.m.

No. 2 Wolves dominate Seton Hill, 40-6

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The No. 2 Newberry Wolves won six consecutive bouts in the middle portion of the dual to power their way to a 40-6 win over Seton Hill in the UPJ Sports Center on Saturday morning.
Newberry vaults itself to 13-1 in duals this season entering its final dual of the Super Region I Duals against No. 8 Mercyhurst (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.) put up a good fight in the opening bout at 125 lbs., but dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 5 Kenny Trumbetta to give the Griffins a 3-0 lead.
Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) earned a 5-1 decision over Stephen Smith at 133 lbs. to tie the match at 3-all and No. 6 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) won by forfeit at 141 lbs. to give the Wolves a 9-3 advantage.
No. 8 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) pushed Newberry's lead to 15-3 with a 1:28 pin of Mike Grant. Brown is now 13-0 on the season in duals action.
At 157 lbs., Davis Bagwell (Birmingham, Ala.) earned his first dual victory with a 5-1 decision over Adam Moranduzzo to put Newberry up 18-3. Blake Ridenour (Maryville, Tenn.) made his first appearance of the Super Region Duals a memorable one with a 20-5 technical fall over Kurt McCamley.
No. 7 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) earned a 16-0 technical fall in the second period at 174 lbs. to put Newberry up 28-3 with three bouts remaining to clinch the dual.
Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) suffered a 6-5 loss by decision to regionally ranked Zach Benzio at 184 lbs. and Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) won by forfeit at 197 lbs. to put Newberry up 34-6.
In the final bout at heavyweight, No. 4 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) earned his third bonus point win of the weekend with a pin of Eric Minerd at 2:07 to seal the 40-6 win.

No. 2 Wolves cruise past Shippensburg, 37-10

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The No. 2 ranked Newberry Wolves recorded five bonus point wins and a forfeit on the way to a dominant 37-10 win over the Shippensburg (Pa.) Red Raiders in the UPJ Sports Center on Saturday morning.
With the win, Newberry moves to 12-1 in duals this season entering the 11 a.m. matchup with Seton Hill (Pa.) University.
Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.) got the dual started on the right foot and earned his first dual win with a 9-1 major decision over Colton Keck to put Newberry up 4-0 after 125 lbs., but Jon Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) was pinned by Cody Myers at 133 lbs. to give the Red Raiders a 6-4 lead.
No. 6 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) put the Wolves back on top at 141 lbs. with a pin of Simon Rice at the 2:26 mark to make it 10-6 in Newberry's favor.
No. 8 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) moved to 12-0 in duals on the season at 149 lbs. with a 16-6 major decision over James Reilley to give the Wolves a 14-6 advantage.
At 157 lbs., Davis Bagwell (Birmingham, Ala.) fought hard against John Lindquist, but came out on the wrong end of a 10-2 major decision, making it a 14-9 dual score at the halfway mark.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The second-ranked Newberry Wolves found themselves staring at a 7-point deficit after five matches, but wins in four of the last five bouts pushed Newberry to a 25-16 comeback win over the No. 13 Pittsburgh-Johnstown Mountain Cats in the Sports Center on Friday night.
Newberry trailed by three points with just two bouts remaining, but Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) at 197 lbs. and No. 4 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) at heavyweight recorded pinfalls to grab the Wolves' 11th dual victory of the season. The Wolves are now 11-1 on the year
The Mountain Cats started off on the right foot with a 10-1 major decision by David Fogel over Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.) at 125 lbs. and a 4-1 decision by No. 3 Ryan Link over Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) at 133 lbs. putting the hosts out to an early 7-0 lead.
No. 6 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) put Newberry on the board at 141 lbs. with an upset 13-8 win by decision over No. 2 Jack Bachman, and a 6-2 decision by No. 8 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) over Nathan Link at 149 lbs. pulled Newberry back to within one dual point at 7-6. Brown's win pushes his season dual mark to 12-0.
At 157 lbs., UPJ's Zach Lundgren was able to pin Davis Bagwell (Birmingham, Ala.) in the final seconds of the bout and give the Mountain Cats momentum with a 13-6 lead at the halfway point.
The Wolves would not go away quietly though, responding with an 11-3 major decision by No. 6 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) over Joel Paolo at 165 lbs. and an 8-2 decision by No. 7 Travis Sheehy (Lawrenceville, Ga.) over Logan Shirey at 174 lbs. tying the dual up at 13-all with three bouts remaining.
UPJ's Gary Lantz scored a 5-4 overtime win over No. 7 Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) at 184 lbs., swinging the momentum back to Johnstown and its partisan crowd at 16-13.
But Reed got the sizeable Newberry contingent on its feet at 197 lbs. with a pin of Jon Moore at the 6:30 mark to give Newberry its first lead of the match at 19-16.
Elkins fell behind in the first period by a 5-1 margin, but turned the tables on Josh Krupa, pinning the Mountain Cat at the 4:48 mark and securing the Newberry win.
"We battled adversity with several key starters out and starting some young guys tonight, but we had their back no matter the outcome tonight," said head coach Jason Valek, who secured his 120th career dual victory. "Our seniors stepped up, especially with Karl Reed and Jake Elkins getting 12 points for us there at the end. I'm really proud of these kids.
"I thought the strength of our team was the front end of each dual, and it will be again once we all recover from some injuries. But our back end of the dual has been exceptionally strong, and those two pins at the end took the wind out of Johnstown's sails."
The Wolves will wrestle three consecutive duals Saturday at the Sports Center, with Shippensburg (Pa.) at 9 a.m., Seton Hill (Pa.) at 11 a.m. and No. 8 Mercyhurst (Pa.) at 1 p.m.

NEWBERRY, S.C. - In a hotly contested battle between two Palmetto State rivals, it was the
No. 2 Newberry Wolves who came out on top, defeating the No. 10 Limestone Saints 23-15 in
wrestling dual action in Eleazer Arena on Tuesday night.
Newberry moves to 10-1 in duals on the season, while Limestone drops to 6-7. The Wolves' next
action comes with four matches at the Super Region I Duals in Johnstown, Pa., on Friday and Saturday.
The dual started at 141 lbs., and the visiting Saints immediately pulled an upset, with Kenneth
Kampnich pinning BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) just 1:30 into the bout to give Limestone a 6-0 lead.
At 149 lbs., Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) pulled the home team level with a pinfall victory over Shawn
Landgraff at the 4:46 mark. Brown is ranked eighth nationally in his weight class and has a perfect
11-0 record in dual matches this season. It also marked Brown's third pin of a Limestone wrestler
this season.
Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) gave Newberry the lead at 157 lbs., earning a 5-2 decision over
No. 8 Jeremy Bommaritto, and No. 6 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) staked the Wolves out to a 12-6 dual
lead with a 6-0 shutout decision over Daniel McGillivray.
At 174 lbs., Limestone's Bryce Sopko pulled the guests closer with an 8-4 decision over No. 7
Travis Sheehy, but No. 7 Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) put the Wolves lead back at six points with
an 8-3 decision over Landon Hall making it 15-9 in the Wolves' favor.
A turning point in the match could have come at 197 lbs., when Limestone's No. 1 and undefeated
Dan Scanlan took a 6-1 decision over Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) and the Wolves were deducted
a team point, making it only a 14-12 Newberry lead.
But at heavyweight, No. 4 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) got the crowd on its feet with a pin of
Charles Weber at the 2:19 mark to make a 20-12 Wolves lead.
Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) clinched the match for the Wolves when his 10-9 decision over
Eric Rholetter gave Newberry a 23-12 lead. Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) lost a 9-2 decision to
Mike Magaha in the final bout to mark the final 23-15 margin.
Newberry is now 7-0 all-time against Limestone in dual competition, as the Wolves claimed their
119th all-time dual win in just their seventh season of competition.

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Limestone wrestling (6-6) has moved into the top ten in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Poll that was released earlier today, Wednesday, January 11. The Saints come in at No. 10 overall after an impressive seventh place showing at the National Duals on Saturday and Sunday, January 7 and 8. Senior Dan Scanlan (Leesburg, Va.), after a remarkable performance at the National Duals, has moved into the top spot in the 197-pound division.
Unranked in the last national poll, the Saints skyrocketed up the poll with an eye-opening showing at the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. For the first time all season, LC's heralded starting line-up flexed its muscles in wins over San Francisco State (25-12), No. 15 King (16-15) and No. 11 Wisconsin-Parkside (22-18). Limestone's only two losses came to No. 2 Upper Iowa and No. 6 Augustana (S.D.), and even in defeat they showed their true mettle.
Scanlan ascends to No. 1 in the country in the 197-pound class after a truly impressive showing at the Duals. His opening match of the tournament pitted him against No. 1 Carl Broghammer of Upper Iowa in showdown of No. 1 vs. No. 2. Scanlan shutout Broghammer, 4-0, and essentially cemented his rise to the top spot.
He wasn't done though as he also defeated No. 6 Charles Morgan of King for the second time in three weeks. Scanlan was pushed to the limit by Morgan, but a takedown in the fourth overtime gave him the hard fought, 4-2, decision. For the tournament, he went 4-0 and outscored his opponents 31-6 on his way to being named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the event. He is also 9-0 on the season with and has outpaced his opponents by the amazing margin of 90-8.
Junior Jeremy Bommarito (Fenton, Mich.) makes his first appearance in the national polls with a No. 8 ranking in the 157-pound division. The Fenton, Mich. native started out the Duals with a notable 5-4 decision over No. 7 Winston Robbins of Upper Iowa. The winning continued as he then went on to defeat Vicente Aboytes of San Francisco State and Jeremy Miller of King to close out Saturday, January 7.
His only loss of the tournament came to No. 6 Marcus Edgington of Augustana in closely contested, 4-2, decision. Bommarito rebounded to pin UWP's LaQuan Lunford in only 1:39 to finish 4-1 during the two-day tournament. Bommartio is currently 10-4 on the season with two wins by pin fall.
Limestone is back in action on Tuesday, January 17 as they prepare for a huge showdown with rival and second ranked, Newberry. The dual match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
NOTES
The No. 10 ranking is the highest ever in the history of the Limestone wrestling program. The previous high was No. 15.

Newberry drops to No. 2 in NWCA Division II national rankings
Six Wolves ranked in their weight class

EDMOND, Okla. - Following a runner-up finish at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals last weekend,
the Newberry College Wolves are ranked No. 2 in the latest NWCA Division II national rankings,
which were released Wednesday.
Newberry is receiving 152 votes, which marks a second-place vote from every voting member.
St. Cloud State moved to No. 1 following its 23-12 victory in the National Duals championship.
Six Wolves are ranked in their weight class, with heavyweight Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.)
earning the highest ranking at fourth nationally. He has an 11-3 overall record and 7-2 duals record.
The Jackson, N.J., duo of B.J. Young at 141 lbs. and Sean Byrnes at 165 lbs. are each ranked
sixth in their weight class. Young has a 22-8 overall record with a 5-2 mark in duals, while
Byrnes is 12-6 overall and 6-2 in duals.
Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) at 174 lbs. and Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) at 184 lbs. are eached
ranked seventh in their class. Sheehy has a 24-8 overall record and 7-3 duals record, while Brown
is 21-4 overall and 8-1 in duals. Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) at 149 lbs. rounds out Newberry's
ranked wrestlers in eighth place with a 26-6 overall record and 10-0 duals record.

Wolves retain No. 1 ranking in Super Region I poll

ERIE, Pa. - Coming off of a runner-up performance at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, the Newberry College wrestling squad has retained the top ranking in Super Region I. The Wolves are the only team with a wrestler ranked in the top six of their weight class, with all 10 wrestlers ranked in the top three of their class.
Newberry will retain the top regional ranking through the Super Region I Duals in Johnstown, Pa., on January 20-21. Following a Tuesday, January 17, home dual against Limestone, the Wolves will take on fourth-ranked Pittsburgh-Johnstown, sixth-ranked Kutztown (Pa.), eighth-ranked Shippensburgh (Pa.) and ninth-ranked Seton Hill at the regional event.
The Wolves boast three top ranked wrestlers in the regional rankings. Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) is first at 174 lbs. with a 24-8 overall record and 7-3 duals record, with Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) ranked first at 184 lbs. with a 21-4 overall and 8-1 duals record. At 285 lbs., Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) is the top ranked wrestler with an 11-3 overall and 7-2 duals record.
Two Wolves are ranked second in their class, with Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) ranked second at 133 lbs. with a 16-8 overall record and 5-4s dual record and Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) ranked second at 149 lbs. with a 26-6 overall record and perfect 10-0 duals mark.
The remaining five ranked Wolves all hold third place in their weight class. No. 1 Wolves fall in NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals final to No. 3 St. Cloud State, 23-12

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The No. 1 Newberry College Wolves came back from an early deficit to tie the final dual of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, but the No. 3 St. Cloud State Huskies won four of the final five bouts to take the championship with a 23-12 victory at the Prairie Capital Convention Center on Sunday.
Newberry falls to 9-1 on the season in dual action, while St. Cloud State moves to 11-0 in duals. Newberry claims runner-up honors at the National Duals for the third time in its four appearances at the event.
Two surprise results at the beginning of the dual set things up for the Huskies. At 125 lbs., No. 1 Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) suffered a 10-3 loss by decision to Dylan Wright, and the No. 6 133-pounder in Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) was pinned just 38 seconds in the match by Andrew Pokorny to put the Wolves in an early 9-0 hole.
The Wolves battled back starting with an 11-4 decision by No. 2 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) over Jay Hildreth at 141 lbs. No. 5 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) earned a 3-0 shutout decision over Matt Leibforth at 149 lbs., followed by a 13-7 decision by Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) over Josh Howk at 157 lbs. to tie the dual at 9-all at the halfway point.
The Huskies reclaimed the advantage in the dual with a 13-1 major decision by No. 1 Tad Merritt at 165 lbs. over No. 5 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) to give SCSU a 13-9 lead.
No. 6 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) brought Newberry closer with a 6-2 decision over Kurt Salmen at 174 lbs. to make it a 13-12 match.
No. 6 Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) had a battle on his hands at 184 lbs, and held a late lead over No. 2 Derek Skala, but the SCSU wrestler earned a late third period takedown to sent the match into overtime, where he earned another takedown to take a 4-2 decision and push the Huskies' lead to 16-12.
Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) had a chance at 197 lbs. to close the gap, but Lucas Munkelwitz took a 6-0 decision to clinch the match with a 19-12 lead. In the final bout, No. 1 Jake Kahnke took a 19-8 major decision over No. 4 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) to provide the final 23-12 margin.
Newberry now has an 11-5 all-time National Duals record with three runner-up placements and a fourth place finish in four appeareances at the event.

No. 1 Newberry advances to NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals finals with 18-15 comeback win over No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney
Wolves claims final four bouts to advance to third final in four year

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The No. 1 Newberry College Wolves claimed the final four bouts to come back from a six-point deficit and claim an 18-15 win over No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney in the semifinals of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the Prairie Capital Convention Center on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Newberry moves to 9-0 in duals this season and advances to the championship match at 3 p.m. Central (4 p.m. Eastern) against No. 3 St. Cloud State, which upset No. 2 Upper Iowa in the semifinals by a 22-13 score.
Newberry is 0-1 all-time in duals against St. Cloud State, losing in last year's third place match. The Wolves found themselves in yeat another tightly contested battle, with only one bonus point win in the entire dual.
No. 1 Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) got the match off to a good start at 125 lbs. for the Wolves with a 2-0 decision over Jordan White. McDonald did not concede control in the second period and had an escape in the third to earn the decision and put Newberry up 3-0.
In the 133 lbs. bout, No. 6 Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) was taken down early in the first period and his opponent, Stephen Weimer recorded nearfall points. That would be the deciding points in the bout, as Weimer took a 5-4 decision to tie the dual at 3-all.
At 141 lbs., one of the premier matchups of the entire tournament lived up to its billing as the No. 1 and No. 2 wrestlers in the nation matched up. Dalton Jensen of UNK was the top-ranked wreslter coming into the bout, and left that way with a tight 7-6 decision over No. 2 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) with a point for accumulated riding time. Young earned a reversal with one second remaining, but it was too late, and Jensen's win by decision gave the Lopers a 6-3 lead.
No. 5 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) tied the dual back up for the Wolves with a clutch 3-2 win by decision over Raufeon Stots at 149 lbs. Brown trailed 0-1 entering the third period, but earned an escape and a takedown to win the bout and tie the dual at 6-all.
The turning point of the match came at 157 lbs., where UNK's No. TJ Hepburn needed only 26 seconds to pin Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and give the Lopers a 12-6 lead at the halfway mark of the match.
At 165 lbs., an intense matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers came down to a pair of stalling calls which gave No. 2 Joey Wilson of UNK a 2-1 decision over No. 5 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) and put the Lopers up by a 15-6 margin.
With their backs against the wall, the Wolves' higher weight wrestlers stood up to the challenge and won the final four bouts to eke out the win.
At 174 lbs., No. 6 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) scored a reversal just six seconds into the third period to take a 7-5 upset decision over No.4 Mark Fiala. No. 6 Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) followed that up at 184 lbs. with a 2-1 decision on accumulated riding time over Brock Smith. Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) made his first appearance in the National Duals this year count, tying the match at 15-all entering the final bout with a third period reversal giving him a 4-3 decision over Matt Lenagh.
In the final bout, No. 4 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) was trailing Nick Bauman 0-1 entering the third period. The senior scored a reversal just 16 seconds into the period and rode out Bauman to score a 3-1 decision and give the Wolves a huge 18-15 win.
With the win, Newberry is now 11-4 all-time at the National Duals and advances to the finals for the third time in its four appearances. The Wolves are previously 0-2 in the National Duals, with losses to the discontinued Nebraska-Omaha program in 2009 and 2010.

Wolves eke out eight close decisions in battle with Tornado

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - After a dominant win in the first round of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on Saturday morning, the top-ranked Newberry College Wolves faced a tougher test in No. 15 and eighth-seeded King College, but advanced to the semifinals with a 24-6 victory over the Tornado.
Newberry is now 8-0 in duals this season and moves on to face No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney in the semifinals at 11 a.m. Central (noon Eastern) on Sunday. The Lopers are 2-0 in duals after wins today over Ouachita Baptist (30-6) and No. 6 Augustana (21-10). Newberry is 1-1 all-time in duals against UNK, with a 22-13 win in the semifinals of the 2009 National Duals.
Every bout in the dual was tightly contested, with neither team recording a bonus point win. Newberry's only two losses came in overtime decisions. The first of those was No. 1 Connor McDonald's (Rehoboth, Del.) 6-4 loss in sudden victory 2 to Jerrell McCabe at 125 lbs.
The Wolves then proceeded to record seven straight wins by decision. No. 6 Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) held off Cullen King at 133 lbs., 4-1, and No. 2 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) eked out a 9-8 decision at 141 lbs. over Tywan Claxton to give Newberry a 6-3 lead.
No. 5 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) earned a 6-3 decision over Nicolas Stella at 149 lbs., and Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won at 157 lbs. over Jeremy Miller by an 8-4 margin making it a 12-3 Wolves lead.
Two nationally ranked wrestlers recorded shutout for Newberry to pull away even further. No. 5 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) earned a 4-0 decision over Patrick Spano at 165 lbs., and a 5-0 decision by No. 6 Travis Sheehy over Dyvon Passmore at 174 lbs. put Newberry in position to win the dual.
No. 6 Mitch Brown won at 184 lbs. by a 6-2 margin over Brandon Tressler, giving Newberry a 21-3 lead with two bouts remaining and giving the Wolves the win. Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) put up a great fight against No. 6 Frank Morgan at 197 lbs., but lost a 2-1 decision. No. 4 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) closed out the match with a 5-2 decision over Dondricus Anderson.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The No. 1 ranked and top-seeded Newberry Duals got off to a hot start at the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, scoring seven bonus point wins, a decision and a forfeit on the way to crushing Central Missouri 43-6 in the first round at the Prairie Capital Convention Center on Saturday morning.
Newberry only dropped one bout in the dual on the way to its ninth match victory in the fourth appearance at the National Duals. The Wolves are now 3-0 all-time against UCM, only dropping two of 30 bouts in those matches.
No. 1-ranked Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) got the match started off at 125 lbs. with a pin of Tyler Balty just 1:33 into the match to put the Wolves up 6-0. McDonald moved to 8-6 on the year, with half of his wins in 2011-12 by pinfall.
At 133 lbs., No. 6 Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) needed just two periods to record a commanding 17-0 technical fall over Eric Mateo. The win put Newberry up 11-0 and was sweet revenge for Oliver, who was pinned by Mateo at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis. The win was Oliver's 103rd career victory and his third technical fall of the year.
An upset occurred at 141 lbs., as BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) was pinned at the 1:26 mark to narrow the Wolves' lead to 11-6.
No. 5 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) wasted no time at 149 lbs., working his way to a 13-3 major decision over Scott Neumann. Newberry's all-time leader in major decisions now has 30 in his career and pushed Newberry to a 15-6 advantage.
At 157 lbs., Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) allowed only a second period reversal to Russell Naylor on the way to an impressive 18-2 technical fall. The win put Newberry up 20-6 and was Knapp's first tech fall of the season.
Blake Ridenour (Maryville, Tenn.) got the call at 165 lbs. and did not disappoint, pinning UCM's Todd Brier at the 4:01 mark for his second pin of the season, putting Newberry up 26-6.
No. 6 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) faced a battle at 174 lbs., but held on for an 8-7 decision over William Ressel to move to 21-8 on the year and clinch the dual for Nebwerry with a 29-6 advantage.
At 184 lbs., No. 6 Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) picked up a 13-1 major decision over Derick Sanders, followed by a 10-1 major decision at 197 lbs. from Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) over Travis Miller and a forfeit victory for No. 4 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) at heavyweight to close out Newberry's second 40-plus point dual of the season.
The Wolves are now 7-0 in duals this season and will face No. 15 and eighth-seeded King (Tenn.) in the quarterfinals, at 1 p.m. Central (2 p.m. on the east coast). The Tornado is 2-0 in duals on the year after winning the last four bouts for an 18-14 win over No. 19 Minnesota State-Mankato in the first round. Newberry is 1-0 all-time in dual action against King, with a 32-6 win at home last season.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Newberry College Wolves' wrestling squad is ranked No. 1 in the nation
in the coaches' poll and will hold the top seed in the 2012 National Wrestling Coaches' Association
National Duals this weekend at the Prairie Capital Convention Center.
Newberry (6-0 in dual competition this season) will open the National Duals on Saturday,
January 7, at 9 a.m. Central (10 a.m. on the east coast) against Central Missouri (1-2).
The Wolves are 2-0 all-time against the Mules.
In the December national rankings, Newberry had eight nationally ranked wrestlers, while
Central Missouri had one in the 8th-ranked heavyweight, Cody Beck.
The Wolves are coming off of a 3-0 weekend at the Grand Canyon Duals with wins over No. 5 Grand Canyon,
No. 18 Colorado Mesa and NCWA club No. 1 California Baptist.
Newberry's second round matchup will be either eighth-seeded King College of Tennessee (1-0 in duals)
or Minnesota State-Mankato (1-0 in duals), depending on each first round match's outcome.
That match will take place at 1 p.m. Central, regardless of result.
Newberry must win four consecutive matches in order to claim its first national duals championship.
Standing in the Wolves' way are seventh other seeded teams: No. 2 Upper Iowa, No. 3 St. Cloud State,
No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney, No. 5 Augustana (S.D.), No. 6 Central Oklahoma, No. 7 Wisconsin-Parkside
and No. 8 King (Tenn.).
Unseeded teams in the 16-team event are Central Missouri, Minnesota-Mankato, Findlay (Ohio),

No. 1 Newberry closes out 3-0 day at Grand Canyon Duals with 19-16 win over No. 5 'Lopes
Young's pin at 141 pushes Wolves to the win

PHOENIX, Ariz. - A pin in 1:38 by 141-pounder BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) provided the No. 1 Newberry
College Wolves' margin of victory in a 19-16 win over host No. 5 Grand Canyon University to close
out a 3-0 day at the 2011 GCU Duals.
The teams split the matches down the middle with Newberry and GCU each winning five matches.
There were seven decisions - four for GCU and three for Newberry - and each squad recorded a
major decision. Young's pin provided the bonus points needed for the Wolves to earn the win.
GCU started off on a roll as No. 7 Kyle McCrite won a matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers at
125 lbs., with a 7-6 upset of Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.). Lino Estrada earned an 8-5 decision
over No. 6 Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) at 141 lbs. to give the hosts a 6-0 lead.
Young - ranked second in the nation at 141 lbs. - was barely halfway through the first period before
he tied the dual up with the pin of David Makara.
Another close match took place at 149 lbs., as Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) needed overtime to take
a 5-4 decision over Bobby Wards and give the Wolves a 9-6 lead.
Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had a rough day in his first two matches at 157 lbs., and took
his frustration out on No. 4 Ted Bristol with an 11-2 major decision to put Newberry up 13-6.
At 165 lbs., No.5 Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) earned a 4-2 decision over David Wilber, pushing the
Newberry advantage to 16-6.
Two-time GCU All-American Victor Carazo opened his season today, and showed why he will be a wrestler
to contend with later in the year, taking a 7-2 decision over Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) at 174 lbs.
No. 6 Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) pushed the Newberry lead to 19-9 with a close 4-3 decision over Brett Sanchez.
GCU narrowed the deficit to six points entering the heavyweight match after Celic Bell's 16-4 major decision
over Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.), and the Antelopes were able to win the final match, but Jordan Johnson
only managed a 4-3 decision over No. 4 Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.), leaving the Wolves with a hard-fought
win over a high-quality opponent.
The Wolves now hold a 6-0 dual record on the season heading into next weekend's National Wrestling
Coaches Association National Duals in Springfield, Ill. Pairings for the national dual championships
will be announced on Monday, January 2, 2012, with the Wolves expected to hold the top seed.

PHOENIX, Ariz. - In a battle of teams ranked No. 1 in their division, it was the Newberry College
Wolves who came away victorious over California Baptist, 20-14, in the third session of the GCU Duals
on Saturday.
Newberry is ranked No. 1 nationally in NCAA Division II, while Cal Baptist is the top ranked team
in the NCWA collegiate club ranks.
With the win, Newberry moves to 5-0 in duals this season, with head coach Jason Valek picking up
his 115th career dual victory.
The match started off with a pair of upsets, as Cal Baptist won the first two matches over nationally
ranked Newberry wrestlers.
Jim Martinez won over the No. 1 ranked Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.), 7-3, at 125 lbs., and Alex Anunciation
defeated No. 6 Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.), 4-3, at 133 lbs., to give the Lancers a 6-0 lead.
Newberry took decisions in the next two matches to tie the dual up. No. 2 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) won
a 4-3 decision over Bradford Gerl at 141 lbs. and No. 5 Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) won a 4-2 decision over
Dylan Catline at 149 lbs. to tie the dual at 6-all after four matches.
CBU regained the match lead at the halfway point as Chris Santana's 8-6 decision over Taylor Knapp
(Lawrenceville, Ga.) gave the Lancers a 9-6 lead before the Wolves took control.
The Wolves won the next four matches, with No. 5 Sean Byrnes' (Jackson, N.J.) 9-0 shutout major decision
over Bronson Gerl at 165 lbs. marking the first bonus point win of the dual and giving Newberry a 10-9 advantage.

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The top-ranked Newberry College wrestling squad opened the 2011 Grand Canyon Duals
with a 25-18 win over 18th-ranked Colorado Mesa University at the GCU Arena on Saturday morning.
Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) started the dual off on the right foot for the Wolves, scoring a 16-1
technical fall over Parke Overmiller at 125 lbs. to put Newberry up 5-0. The Wolves trailed in a dual
for just the second time this season, after CMU's Tyler Nelson pinned 133-pounder Steve McLeod (Gilbert, S.C.)
at the 1:51 mark to give the Mavericks a 6-5 advantage.
Two nationally ranked Wolves put Newberry back in the lead. No. 2 BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) scored a
16-0 technical fall over James Martinez at 141 lbs., followed by a 9-1 major decision from No. 5 Deral Brown
(Elgin, S.C.) over Trevor Donarski at 149 lbs., putting Newberry up 14-6.
The Mavericks made their way back into the match at 157 lbs., when Jon Gappmeier pinned Taylor Knapp
(Lawrenceville, Ga.) with less than a minute left in the match to make it a 14-12 match.
Blake Ridenour (Maryville, Tenn.) pulled off an upset at 165 lbs., winning an 8-2 decision over No. 4
Dylan Granard to make it a 17-12 Newberry lead. Colorado Mesa was not done battling though, as the Mavs

(Suwanee, Ga.) at 174 lbs., to narrow the deficit back down to 17-15.
No. 6 Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) took care of business at 184 lbs., defeating Nick Petersen 6-1 to put
the Wolves up 20-15. The Mavs battled back within to one match at 197 lbs., as Jordan Passehl scored
a last minute takedown and near-fall on Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) to take a 10-6 decision,

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The top ranked Newberry College wrestling program will close out the 2011 calendar
year with its toughest dual tests yet this season, as the Wolves take on three programs at the
Grand Canyon University Duals tomorrow, December 31, at the new GCU Arena.
Newberry starts the event against the No. 18 Colorado Mesa Mavericks at 9 a.m. Arizona time
(11 a.m. on the east coast). At 1 p.m. in Arizona, the Wolves take on the Lancers of California
Baptist University, who are ranked No. 1 in the collegiate club ranks. At 3 p.m. in Arizona,
the highlight match of the day takes place as Newberry takes on the host Grand Canyon Antelopes,
ranked No. 5 in the nation.
Ranked No. 1 in the country, Newberry brings eight nationally-ranked wrestlers to the 2011 Grand
Canyon University Duals. Each dual will start with Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Md.), the top-ranked
125-pounder in the nation. Against GCU, McDonald is slated to face off against No. 7 Kyle McCrite.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) is ranked sixth nationally at 133 lbs., followed up by B.J. Young
(Jackson, N.J.), the second ranked 141-pounder. At 149 lbs., Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) is ranked
fifth nationally.
One of the highlight matches will take place in the early session at 165 lbs., as Newberry's Sean Byrnes
(Jackson, N.J.), ranked fifth in the nation faces off against the fourth-ranked wrestler in that weight
class, Dylan Granard of Colorado Mesa. Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) is ranked sixth nationally at
174 lbs., as is Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) at 184 lbs. Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) rounds out
Newberry's nationally ranked grapplers, ranking fourth in the nation in the heavyweight classification.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - It was not a banner day for the Newberry College wrestling team. However,
great teams find a way to win when they don't have their best. No. 1 Newberry held on to its
day one lead edging No. 2 Upper Iowa 117-115.5 while dominating the rest of the field. Newberry defeated 24 other teams to take home its second straight Midwest Classic.
"Anytime you win its a great thing," head coach Jason Valek said. "How our kids perservered
through the adversity this weekend will serve us well in the competitions to come."
Senior Jake Elkins ( Trussville, Ala.) and Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) were Newberry's top finishers.
Both Wolves finished second and lost to defending national champions. Sheehy is developing quite
a rivalry with Findlay's Michael Lybarger, who has defeated him in overtime in each of the last two weeks.
Elkins wrestled a solid tournament taking decisions in all of his matches yesterday before taking
a 1-0 decision against Zach Rosol (Upper Iowa) in the heavyweight semifinal. The Alabama native
fell to Matt Meuleners 5-2 in the championship match.
Zach Anderson was Newberry's only third place finisher defeating Lincoln's Matt Dwyer 3-1 in
overtime to secure the finish.
Mitchell Brown (Omaha, Neb.) finished fourth at 184 taking two decisions before falling to
Findlay's Adam Walters in the third-place match.
BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) made the semifinals before dropping a 7-6 match to Nick Wykoff (West Liberty).
He bounced back to finish fifth with a 10-3 win over Dustin Dooley (Fort Hays) at 141.
Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) started the day in the semifinal before an injury forced him in to a
sixth-place finish at 165.
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) and Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) each finished sixth at 133
and 157, respectively.
Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) finished seventh at 149 to round out the Newberry placers. Team scores,
final brackets and a list of Newberry placers is below.
"We wrestled far below our potential this weekend in many instances but still were able to piece
together a victory against the strongest field ever at this tournament," Valek said.
No. 1 Newberry will wrestle next at the Grand Canyon Duals on Dec. 31. The Wolves will take on
Colorado Mesa, California Baptist and Grand Canyon.

No. 1 Wolves dominate Newberry Duals
Newberry records wins over Lake Erie, No. 17 Findlay and Chadron State

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The No. 1 ranked Newberry College wrestling team started its duals schedule off on the right foot winning all three duals at the fifth annual Newberry Duals on Saturday. Lake Erie was the first victim as Newberry blanked the Storm 47-0. The Wolves went on to defeat No. 17 Findlay 31-9 and finished the day crushing Chadron State 34-9.
"Overall, it was an outstanding day for our team and the college community as a whole," head coach Jason Valek said. "We are really excited about the progress we are making overall."
No. 1 Newberry lost just four matches on the entire day posting a 26-4 record. Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.), BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.), Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.), Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) and Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) all finished the day 3-0.
No. 6 Oliver (133) wrestled two close matches taking two decisions, one from Findlay's Nickholaas Weisjahn 4-0 and the other against Chadron State's Dustin Stodola 3-1. The senior had an easier time with Lake Erie's Ian Ross taking a 16-3 major decision.
No. 2 Young (141) was not tested all day pinning Lake Erie's Thomas McKicker at the 1 minute, 31 second mark. He followed that up with two major decision wins over Findlay's Chad Channel and Chadron State's Leandro Arias.
No. 5 Brown took three decisions over Lake Erie's Dylan Zivcic, Findlay's Jeremy Espinoza and Chadron State's C.J. Clark.
Knapp (157) and Byrnes (165) were the only Newberry wrestlers to record more than one pin on the day. Knapp pinned the storm's Tyler Tesney at the 2:33 mark and pinned Bruce Zurek at 1:40. He had a win by forfeit sandwiched between the two pins.
Early in the second period No. 5 Byrnes pinned Lake Erie's Matt Vandermeer and 52 seconds in to the third period he pinned Mikah Kadera of Chadron State. Findlay's Mason True gave Byrnes his toughest match of the day, but the senior took down True early in the first period and made the 2-0 lead last.
No. 4 Elkins made his 2011-12 debut with a fall over the Storm's Robert Zappitelli II just before the 5:00 mark. After winning his second match by injury default, the senior defeated the Eagles' RJ Boylan 8-1.
No. 6 Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) went 2-1 on the day. After a win by major decision in his first match, Sheehy (174) took on No. 1 Michael Lybarger of Findlay. The Georgia native had a 5-4 lead late in the match but Lybarger took Sheehy down and scored a pin with just 12 seconds left in the match. The 174-pounder made quick work of Chadron State's Dylan Fors pinning him at the 1:15 mark.
No. 6 Mitchell Brown (Omaha, Neb.) slammed the Storm's Jon Schaefer early in the match and dominated the rest of the way defeating him by fall at 1:52. Adam Walters of Findlay wrestled him close, but Brown (184) fought hard and took a 4-2 decision. The Omaha native did not wrestle against Chadron State.
No. 1 Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) finished the day 2-1. The 125-pounder took a 2-0 decision from Austin Gilihan of Lake Erie and a 3-1 decision from Connor Larson of Chadron State.
The Wolves will return to action next Sunday in Indianapolis at the Midwest Classic.
"It was nice to see the community and the support in the stands today, Valek said. "The kids made another step forward but we still have a ways to go. So many people made this event a success and we are grateful for the support."

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College wrestling team opens up its duals schedule at home at the fifth annual Newberry Duals with weigh-ins set to begin Saturday, Dec. 10 at 8 a.m. in Eleazer Arena. The Wolves will wrestle Lake Erie at 9 a.m., Findlay at 11 a.m. and will finish the day with a 3 p.m. dual against Chadron State. Joining those four teams at the duals will be Limestone, North Carolina-Pembroke and Anderson. More Newberry notes are available at the bottom of the release.
Wrestling will take place on three mats. Each team will wrestle three or four matches. The teams with three matches will receive a bye in one of the four rounds. Live stats will be available for all matches while the Newberry matches will be streamed live. A live stats and video link will be listed at the bottom of the release.
"The Newberry Duals is a chance for teams from all over the country to compete and gain the opportunity to see teams we might not otherwise see," Valek said. "This year's event wouldn't be possible without the generous support of so many in the Newberry community. They make Newberry a special place to be."
Head coach Jason Valek's program has reached an all-time high when it was voted No. 1 by the Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association as released on Wednesday. It is the first time a Newberry team has been ranked No. 1 since the men's basketball team pulled off the feat during the 1976-77 season. It also marks the first school in the state of South Carolina to be ranked No. 1 regardless of sport during the 2011-12 school year.
Newberry has eight wrestlers ranked nationally and a lot of hype to live up to. It begins Saturday morning. Senior Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) will lead the way for Newberry from the 125-pound weight class. The Delaware native is ranked No. 1 in the country and is 3-1 with three falls in the early going. His only loss came at the hands of Rob Deutsch of Old Dominion.
Findlay's Michael Lybarger (174) joins McDonald as the only two No. 1 ranked wrestlers at the Newberry Duals. Over 20 nationally ranked wrestlers will compete.
National runner-up BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) enters the Newberry Duals with a 10-4 record. Young (141) comes in No. 2 at 141 and figures to be a major piece of, what Newberry hopes to be, a national championship puzzle.
Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) sits at 8-1 and No. 6 in the nation at 184. Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) is 8-2 after winning both the King College Open and the Pembroke Classic. Oliver is ranked sixth at 133.
"We always welcome the opportunity to see quality competition," Valek said. "It helps us see where we are, where we are going and ,more importantly, what we need to improve."

Wolves ranked No. 1 in Division II NWCA poll for first time in school history

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College wrestling team jumped to No. 1 in the NCAA Division II National
Wrestling Coaches Association's first regular season poll. The jump makes the Wolves No. 1 in the country
in both the NWCA Poll and the Basford poll for the first time in school history. Newberry was ranked No. 2
in the preseason poll but overtook preseason No. 1 St. Cloud State for the top ranking.
This marks the first time in school history the Wolves have been No. 1 in the NWCA poll. The Wolves received
three of eight first-place votes after finishing sixth in the country in 2010 and winning their fourth
consecutive Super Region I title.
"It's cool that we can say little ole' Newberry is the number one team in the country," head coach
Jason Valek said "I know that many inside and outside the program take a sense of pride in this,
and it makes us all very proud to receive such recognition."
Upper Iowa took the second spot while St. Cloud State dropped to third.
Newberry has eight wrestlers ranked in the country headlined by senior Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.),
who maintained his No. 1 ranking at the 125-pound weight class. The senior started the season 3-1 recording
three falls. His only loss came at the hands of Old Dominion's Rob Deutsch, a Division I opponent.
McDonald is also No. 1 in the Basford poll.
National runner-up B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) has started the season 10-4 with five falls and sits
second at 141 while Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) is fourth at 285. Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.)
and Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) sit at No. 5 at 165 and 149, respectively.

Wolves dominate Super Region I rankings for second straight time

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College wrestling team sits atop the Super Region I coaches poll
for the second straight time as released today. The Wolves have the No. 1 ranked grappler in
four different weight classes and have the No. 2 at four others. Newberry has been atop the
rankings in both polls this season and has at least one wrestler in the top four of every weight class.
"We are constantly talking about the process of getting better," head coach Jason Valek said.
"We can see it each time we head to the mat. We need to develop more confidence in our talents
and draw on those to move forward."
National runner-up BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) comes in No. 1 at 141 pounds. Connor McDonald
(Rehoboth, Del.) is atop the rankings at 125 while Mitchell Brown (Omaha, Neb.) (184) and
Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) (285) also received No. 1 rankings. Brown sits at 8-1 and
was fourth in the opening Super Region I poll.
Four Wolves are second at their respective weight classes. Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.)
is second at 133. Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) was second at 149 while Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.)

Nine of 10 Wolves place at Davidson Open

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Karl Reed won the 197-pound weight class leading the Newberry wrestling team
which had nine wrestlers place in the top six at the Davidson Open.
"It was nice to see some of our younger guys wrestle this weekend. They are improving as are
the few older guys we are counting on," head coach Jason Valek said. "We still have a ways to
go for sure, but I compare this team to our '09 team. If they can get tougher like those guys,
the talent is there to do something special."
Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) defeated teammate Joey Grisko (Gloucester Township, N.J.) 3-1 in the
final. The senior defeated North Carolina's Andrew Barksdale by major decision 11-2. Reed rolled
over Limestone's Josh Lewis 9-3 and won his semifinal match by a 15-1 major decision.
Grisko pinned Limestone's Justin Tribble at the 2:10 mark. He defeated teammate Zach Anderson
(Dunwoody, Ga.) 4-2 before falling to Reed in the finals.
Anderson's third place finish gave the wolves a 1-2-3 finish at 197. He took a 20-8 major decision
against the Cumberlands' Thomas Day then defeated Virginia Tech's Logan Rankins 8-2. He fell to
Grisko but recovered against Limestone's Justin Tribble to take a 6-3 decision for third place.
"It (197-pound weight class) is going to be competitive as we have three talented guys going back
and forth," Valek said. "I look forward to seeing one of them emerge as our starter."
Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) pinned North Carolina State's Bret Peltier in 1:12 then scored a
major deciison over Duke's Randy Roden before pinning Belmont Abbey's Chris Sloat just over a
minute in to the match. Sheehy fell in the semifinal to Duke's Trey Adamson 8-7 before winning
two more matches to secure third place.
Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) finished fourth at 184. Holliday won his first match by a 4-1
decision. He defeated Appalachian State's Jesse Johnson by fall at the 2:58 mark. Holliday wrestled
tough but fell in a tight match 3-2 to Tennessee Chattanooga's Robert Prigmore. In the third place
match, he lost to Davidson's Donald Patrick 7-1.
Fifth and sixth place messages were not wrestled due to time constraints, but Travis Laxton
(Live Oak, Fla.), Matt Wade (Easton, Md.), Davis Bagwell (Birmingham, Ala.) and Blake Ridenour
(Maryville, Tenn.) would have been in those matches.

Wrestling announces camp schedule

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College wrestling team and head coach Jason Valek have announced
their camp schedule for 2012. A brochure is available at the bottom of the release for those
who would like to attend.
Valek will head a competition camp set to take place June 24-27. He will head an intensive camp
from July 8-14 and a technique camp July 8-11.
The Wolves are fresh off their fourth consecutive Super Region I championship and a sixth place
finish in the country. BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) was a national runner-up for Newberry in 2010-11.
Newberry has wrestled at the Hokie Open, King College Open and Pembroke Classic during the
2011-12 season.

Wolves have three champions, 13 placers at Pembroke Classic
Newberry looking like one of nation's elite

PEMBROKE, N.C. - Transitioning from good to great is not easy. After four consecutive years of being one of the nation's best, the Newberry College wrestling team is looking to take the next step and become a national champion. The Wolves took a giant leap forward toward their goal today with three champions and 13 placers at the Pembroke Classic. Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.), BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) and Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) all won their respective weight classes on Saturday.
"We talk to our kids about the process a lot. They are making progress and getting better, but we have a long four months ahead," head coach Jason Valek said. "But, we as a staff and team think we can make the transition from good to great.
Oliver won his second consecutive open tournament. The senior rolled through North Carolina-Pembroke's Ryan Blackwell 10-0, took a 9-2 decision over Gardner-Webb's Robert Golde, defeated teammate Bazell Partridge Jr. (Atlanta, Ga.) by technical fall and took care of Appalachian State's Joe Morrison to take home the 133-pound crown.
Young continues his dominance recording two first period pins and a technincal fall to get to the championship match where he defeated Duke's Tanner Hough 6-2 to become the 141-pound champion.
Holliday took care of Limestone's Nick Shappee 4-0 in his opening match then defeated Stuard Nadeau (UNCP) by an 11-4 decision to reach the 184-pound semifinal. Holliday squeaked out a 3-2 win over Shiheem Bryant (UNCP) to reach the final. The freshman recorded his first open win by taking a 3-1 decision over South Carolina's Ben Brummel.
Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) finished second in his season debut. The senior 125-pounder cruised through the bracket recording three pins to get to the final. McDonald dropped a close 4-3 decision to Rob Deutsch (Old Dominion) in the final.
Senior Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) had his best showing of the young season finishing second at 165. Byrnes defeated Duke's Dan Adamo by major decision 12-2, then won over Appalachian State's Kaleb Forrest by technical fall 16-0 at the 4:55 mark. In the semifinal, the senior shut out South Carolina's Mike Ahearn 7-0. In the final, Byrnes fell to North Carolina State's Nijel Jones 3-0. Jones was selected as the most outstanding wrestler at the open.
Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.), Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) and Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) all finished third. Partridge and Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) finished fourth at 133 and 197 pounds, respectively.
Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) finished fifth in the heavyweight class while Jonny Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) finished fifth at 125.
The Wolves had at least one placer in every weight class and two placers in three weight classes (125, 133, 197).
"Kelly, Obie and I are lucky to coach these kids," Valek said. "They are amazing and what they do for Newberry College is incredible. It's rare to find a group as special and dedicated as they are with not only the ability to compete at this level but the ability to beat kids from much larger institutions."

Wolves have six champions, 18 placers at King College Open

BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Newberry College wrestling team is starting its quest to get in to championship
form placing 18 wrestlers including six champions and seven second place finishers.
"It was nice to see our kids have some success against a mixed bag of Division I, II, NAIA and
Junior College competition," head coach Jason Valek said. "It's always great to get some wins and
some confidence while wrestling well. I am extremely impressed with our young guys (Laxton, Partridge,
Johnson and Wade)."
Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.), Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.), Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.),
Zach Anderson (Dunwoody, Ga.) Mitch Brown (Omaha, Neb.) and Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) all won
brackets in their respective weight classes.
Oliver cruised through his bracket. The senior defeated West Virginia Tech's Wade Lacey 8-1,
Cumberland's Calob Perkins by technical fall 15-0, Campbellsville DeCoreus Leavel by pin at
the 6:01 mark of the semifinal and took a 7-2 decision against King College's DMarcus Spencer
to take home the 133-pound crown.
Deral Brown (149) had his second consecutive solid showing. He pinned two opponents and won
by tech fall in a fourth match before beating teammate Seiji Borja (Charleston, S.C.) 4-2 in
the finals. Brown pinned teammate Greg Billingham (Stratford, Conn.) (1:41) and Limestone's
Robert Manning (4:29). Borja won two matches before falling to Brown.
Sheehy bounced back from a tough weekend at the Hokie Open. The Georgia native defeated Liberty's
Keyshaun Ward by technical fall 23-6, King's William Bell by technical fall 19-2 and defeated
teammate Braden Carter (Christianburg, Va.) 8-1 to take home the 174 crown. Carter pinned Limestone's
Jacob Fahlfeder at the 1:43 mark. He took a 6-4 decision against Lindsey Wilson's James Haywood
before falling to Sheehy.
Mitch Brown had his second straight outstanding weekend taking home the 184-pound crown.
The Nebraska native took a 15-2 major decision over Cumberlands' Anthony Meza, defeated
teammate Brian Newman (Toms River, N.J.) 4-0, took a 2-0 decision from Lindsey Wilson's Joseph
Stephens and defeated teammate Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) 4-0 in the championship match.
Holliday pinned two opponents and defeated King's Brandon Tessler 5-2 in the semifinal en route
to his second place finish.
Anderson shined in his season debut. The 197-pounder took a major decision from Cumberlands'
Tom Day and defeated teammate Dave Newman (Toms River, N.J.), who finished sixth on the day,
2-0 to reach the final. Anderson defeated teammate Karl Reed, who finished second, 5-2.
Reed won two matches before falling to Anderson.
In the heavyweight division, Wade pinned West Virgina Tech's David Poston at the 5:40 mark.
Wade proceeded to take two consecutive major decisions before taking a 9-5 decision over
Lindsey Wilson's Theodore Furnish to win the heavyweight class.
Despite not having a winner, Newberry had a solid showing at 125. Steven McLeod (Gilbert, S.C.)
finished second, Jonny Cronin (Las Vegas, Nev.) finished third while Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.)
finished fourth.
Bazell Partridge Jr. (Atlanta, Ga.) finished fifth at 133 while Dave Newman finished sixth at 197.

The Wolves will return to action at 8 a.m. next Saturday at the Braves open hosted by University
of North Carolina-Pembroke.

Three Wolves place at Hokie Open
Mitch Brown finishes second at 184 pounds

SALEM, Va. - Mitchell Brown finished second and was Newberry wrestling's best finisher at the Hokie Open as the Wolves placed three individuals in the tournament. BJ Young and Deral Brown finished sixth in 141 and 149, respectively.
Three placers is the most Newberry has ever had at the Hokie Open.
"Overall, I felt our performance was pretty good today, but we've been pretty good for five or six years now and it's getting pretty old. The time has come to make the next step forward and become great. Being pretty good isnt good enough anymore," head coach Jason Valek said. "To reach our goal of a national championship, we have to be great in all that we do."
Mitchell Brown (Omaha, Neb.) won three matches before falling 10-3 in the 184-pound championship match against Appalachin State's Austin Trotman. He scored all his points on escapes. Brown opened the day with a 4-3 win over Ohio University's Ryan Garringer. He defeated Newberry's own Jared Holliday (Burlington, N.J.) in his second match of the day in the quarterfinal round. The Nebraska native advanced to the finals after a 4-1 decision over Josh Tuck (The Citadel).
"It's great for us to get the exposure against these top flight Division I teams. They challenge our kids and make us work for everything. It serves as a great learning experience rubbing elbows with the nations best and greatly assists us all in the development of our program here at Newberry," Valek said. "I am proud of where we are and I look forward with great anticipation the road ahead of us. "
Young (Jackson, N.J.) rolled through to the semifinals at 141 before dropping a controversial 5-4 decision where it appeared as if he had a reversal in the final seconds of the match. Young did not receive the call falling to Khishignyam Undrakhbayar (The Citadel). He went on to fall in his next two matches to finish sixth. The sophomore pinned Logan Byman (N.C. State) at the 2:43 mark in round one. In round two, he defeated Jordan Dix (The Citadel) by major decision 11-3. A 19-7 major decision victory over Greevy Shawn (Chattanooga) sent him to the semifinals where he lost to Undrakhbayar.
Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.) wrestled well all day in a very crowded bracket at 149. He defeated Jeremy Miller (King College) 6-1 while Nick Brascetta (Virginia Tech) fell 8-3 at the hands of Deral Brown. The Elgin native took a 9-6 decision against Savva Kostis (Appalachin State) 9-6. Deral Brown fell in his final three matches to take sixth place.
Holliday picked up three wins on the day. Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) (197) dropped his first match but ended up 4-2. Matt Wade (Easton, Md.) went 3-2 at 285.
The Wolves will wrestle next on Nov. 13 at the King College Open.

Age Divisions & Tournament Schedule Announced
***New for 2012: Girl's Division***

The Ohio Tournament of Champions has announced the Age Groups, Weight Classes and Event Schedule that it will be using for next year's event, to be held April 21, at the Columbus Convention Center. While the age divisions are the same, the attempt at a World Record 4000 entries, prompted the organizers to add some additional weight classes, along with a Girl's Division.
"Basically, we are going back to the old weight classes that we had about seven years ago," said Tournament Chairman Bart Freidenberg. "The only change is that we now have an Open Division, which we stared two years ago, and have added a Girl's Division for this year." Freidenberg said that the Girl's Division would be for the high school age only, though girl's in the seventh and eighth grade may participate in this group if they so choose. He added that if there was enough interest in this new division, that younger divisions, for the girls, would be considered in the future.
This year, all the Boy's Divisions will place the top eight (8) place finishers, while the Open and Girl's Divisions, both of which will require no pre-qualification, will place the top six (6). In other news, Freidenberg announced that any wrestler from a state that does not have adequate qualifying events, would be exempt from having to qualify, in order to register and participate. "Our goal is not to try to keep wrestlers from participating in our event," Freidenberg said. "The qualification process was adopted to try to keep those who might not be ready for such an event from competing. However, we feel that if a wrestler is coming from an adequate distance, that they more than likely have enough experience under their belt."
He also added that they are currently working on a new website, which should be operational when registration opens on December 1. New this year will be the ability for individuals/teams to be able to enter all their wrestlers, with one user name and thus monitor each individual's status and weight. Clubs and teams may also be able to receive a discount, based on the total number of wrestlers attending. "We're trying to finalize the number of wrestlers needed and the discount they would receive," Freidenberg said. "There will probably be a few different levels that we have. Also we are going to be having three levels of Club/Team competition (local, area and all-star). Scores will be kept, and awards given, in each Age Division and also Overall."
Freidenberg also added that the current site has a list of the current hotels where they have room blocks set up and that, once the new site is finished, most of the hotel listings will have a direct link to click on for reservations at most of the properties.

Entry fee for the Open and Girl's Division will be $40. As like last year, a $5 fee, per wrestler, would be added for event insurance. Freidenberg added that the event will once again feature FREE ADMISSION, for all spectators, and that there would be no additional fees for individuals to coach.

Newberry wrestling resides No. 2 in NWCA Coaches Poll and No. 1 in Basford Poll

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College wrestling team was voted No. 2 in the nation in the
NCAA Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association preseason poll on Wednesday after being
rated No. 1 in the Basford Division II National Rankings three weeks ago. Connor McDonald garnered
the top ranking in the 125-pound weight class in both polls.
The Wolves received three of eight first-place votes in the NWCA poll after finishing sixth in the
country in 2010 and winning their fourth consecutive Super Region I title
Head Coach Jason Valek has every reason to believe they can improve from last year. Newberry has
a ranked wrestler in seven of 10 weight classes in the NWCA poll.
National runner-up B.J. Young (Jackson, N.J.) is ranked second at 141 while Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.)
is fourth at 285. Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) and Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) sit at No. 5 at 165
and 133, respectively.
Deral Brown is No. 6 at 149 while Karl Reed is No. 8 at 197.
St. Cloud State (Minn.) (153) finished three points ahead of Newberry (150) in the NWCA poll.

Four Wolves garner No. 1 individual rankings

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College wrestling team sits atop the opening Super Region I coaches
poll with 99 points. The Wolves have the No. 1 ranked grappler in four different weight classes
and have one in the top four of every class.
National runner-up BJ Young (Jackson, N.J.) comes in No. 1 at 141 pounds. Connor McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.)
is atop the rankings at 125 while Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) (197) and Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.)
(285) also received No. 1 rankings.
Three Wolves are rated second. Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) was second at 133. Deral Brown (Elgin, S.C.)
was second at 149 while Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) is ranked No. 2 at 165.
Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) and Mitchell Brown (Omaha, Neb.) all were
ranked fourth in their respective weight classes. Knapp will wrestle at 157, Sheehy will wrestle at 174
while Brown will take on the field at 184.

Newberry Wolves No. 1 in preseason Basford Division II National Rankings

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College wrestling team is ranked No. 1 in Basford's Division II
National Rankings while senior Connor McDonald was ranked No. 1 in the 125-pound class.
"It is gratifying to receive an honor like this in the preseason," head coach Jason Valek said.
"But, they don't give out rings based on preseason polls. We need to come out and prove ourselves
from the beginning. We have left a lot out there the last few years and need to draw on those
experiences to make the next step forward."
This marks the first time Newberry has been a preseason No. 1 in any national poll. The Wolves
are coming off a season where they finished fourth at the NWCA National Duals and sixth at the
NCAA Division II National Tournament. The Wolves had a dual record of 18-3-1 while qualifying
eight grapplers for the national championships and winning their fourth consecutive NCAA Super
Region I Championship. Last year's finish marked the fourth consecutive time Newberry has
finished in the top eight nationally which includes a second-place finish in 2008-09.
McDonald (Rehoboth, Del.) went 28-3 and finished 3rd in the country in 2011. The senior leads
a slew of Wolves ranked in the top twelve individually. Returning national finalist B.J. Young
(Jackson, N.J.) is No. 2 in the 141-pound class while returning All-American Matt Oliver
(Toms River, N.J.) is ranked fourth at 133 pounds.
Returning All-American Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) is ranked sixth at 285 while senior
Sean Byrnes (Jackson, N.J.) ranks seventh at 165. Karl Reed (Mount Laurel, N.J.) ranks eighth
at 197 while Taylor Knapp (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is ranked ninth at 157. UNC-Greensboro transfer
Travis Sheehy (Suwanee, Ga.) garnered an 11th place ranking.
The Wolves will begin their season Nov. 6 at the Hokie Open hosted by Virginia Tech.
"This is a great honor for the program," Valek said. "We have a lot of talented wrestlers.
If we work our tails off and do the little things, we have a chance to do something special
this season."

Anundson takes silver at FILA Grappling World Championships

BELGRADE, Serbia - Former Newberry standout Kelly Anundson won his third career World Grappling
medal with a silver in the No-Gi Absolute division of the FILA Grappling World Championships in Serbia.
His efforts helped the United States to a third-place finish in the No-Gi Grappling division.
Anundson won three straight matches, two by submission and the other was a 3-1 decision to reach
the finals. He fell to Spain's Juan Francisco Espino 1-0.
Anundson was a 2009 world champion in two weight classes.
The 2008 graduate was a Junior College All-American out of California's Lassen Community College.
He became a two-time national qualifier and All-American at Newberry.

Former wrestling standout Anundson to wrestle at FILA Grappling World Championships

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Former Newberry wrestling standout Kelly Anundson will join the 2011 Grappling
World Team and compete at the FILA Grappling World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia,
September 29 through October 1.
Anundson, who will be competing in the men's Absolute division, earned his spot on the team by
winning the Absolute division of No-Gi Grappling at the 2011 U.S. Grappling World Team Trials in Las Vegas.
Anundson is one of two Americans who will compete in both No-Gi and Gi-Grappling.
He was the 2010 No-Gi Grappling Absolute division world champion.
Anundson has helped Newberry head coach Jason Valek build the program from scratch in to the
powerhouse it is 2011.
"Kelly has done nothing but represent the college and the wrestling team at the highest levels,"
Valek said. "He is a tremendous steward of our college and its mission."
The 2008 graduate was a Junior College All-American out of California's Lassen Community College.
He became a two-time national qualifier and All-American at Newberry.

Valek named to NWCA Board of Directors

MANHEIM, Pa. - Newberry College head wrestling coach Jason Valek has been named to the
National Wrestling Coaches Association Board of Directors.
Valek joins Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Pat Pecora as the only two Division II coaches on the board.
Entering his seventh year at Newberry, Valek adds this to a long list of accolades. He led the
Wolves to a sixth place finish nationally last season, has won four straight Super Region I championships
and is currently serving as president of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association,
a title he was elected to in January of 2010.
Valek will be an integral part in the NWCA's effort to reach its objectives in 2011-12 which include,
but are not limited to, the development of at least 10 new intercollegiate wrestling programs and the
increase of wrestling promotion.
"I am truly honored to represent the NWCA and Newberry College in this capacity," Valek said.
"It is our goal to continue to move wrestling forward and continue the development of great leaders in our sport."

Wrestling to hold Second Annual Scarlet & Gray 5k Run and Walk

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College wrestling team is holding its second annual Scarlet & Gray 5K Run
and Walk on Sat., September 10, beginning at 8:30 a.m. It will be held in Newberry behind the baseball
field at College St. and Smith Rd.
For all Newberry students, the entry fee is $10 while all other participants will pay $15.
The first 200 registrants are guaranteed a singlet style shirt, and plaques will be given out to
the top three male and female runners as well as to the top male and female walkers. A special
award will be awarded to the top finishing Newberry team or organization. A team must register
a minimum of five runners before the race to qualify.
All proceeds will go to the Newberry wrestling program. Additional donations to the wrestling
team are welcomed.
