South Carolina 4A Wrestling State Dual Championship 2006-2007
The 3rd Round of the 4A State Dual Championships for Wednesday, February 7 looks like this:
Upper State Bracket
#3 Hillcrest (1st in 2-AAAA) at home vs. #8 Rock Hill (2nd in 3-AAAA)
Years ago Hillcrest would not have had a shot against Rock Hill in the playoffs.
Life changes, wrestlers change, coaches change and this year Hillcrest has the edge.
You can count on Rock Hill wrestling 14 matches to completion and not hanging down
early. Hillcrest however has Seven Magnificent Seniors starting and they seem to be on
a mission to get Hillcrest to their first Finals appearance ever. The Bearcats scored
big wins Monday night, routing Boiling Springs, and last Wednesday Rock Hill easily
defeated Irmo in the 1st round. In a swift pick, we go with the top team in the
Upper State to go on to Lugoff ...
SCMAT Prediction - Hillcrest wins
#5 Fort Mill (1st in 3-AAAA) at home vs. #9 White Knoll (1st in 4-AAAA)
Fort Mill has been on a roll lately and scored a big victory over Dorman Monday night
while White Knoll made an even bigger statement upsetting #7 ranked Byrnes. In one of the toughest
region tournaments last weekend, Fort Mill took 6 championships home and appears to be
peaking just in time for their new rivals over in Hillcrest. White Knoll will have a tough time winning this
match on the road so we give the "W" to the home team, though expect this to be very competitive!
SCMAT Prediction - Fort Mill wins
Lower State Bracket
#2 Summerville (2nd in 8-AAAA) at home vs. #4 Battery Creek (3rd in 8-AAAA)
When these teams last met, Summervile outdueled Battery Creek in a close match, 35-24.
This is the biggest match of the Duals so far, #2 vs. #4, and their last boxscore looked like this:
119 -- Eli Ashby (S) pinned Kevin Gates, second;
125 -- Mike Stanley (S) decisioned Bobby Whitman, 13-6;
130 -- Van Collins (S) decisioned Jake Johnson 9-2;
135 -- Ashley Bracklein (S) decisioned Michael Oehl, 5-3;
140 -- Bryson Morgan (BC) decisioned Berlin Oliver, 11-4;
145 -- Kevin Burns (BC) decisioned Cory Grooms, 9-5;
152 -- Rashad Singleton (BC) decisioned Josh Porter. 12-7;
160 -- Christian Johnson (S) pinned David Miller, second;
171 -- Edwin Soto (S) decisioned Barry Jenkins, 6-2;
189 -- Jerrell Roberts (BC) decisioned Willie Thomas, 11-5;
215 -- Marion Chisolm (BC) pinned John Montjoy, third;
285 -- Andre Dewesse (S) pinned Jonathan Smalls, second.
103 -- John Perry (BC) won by forfeit;
112 -- T.J. Hall (S) pinned Chris Bush, second;
What will Battery Creek do this time to possibly change this outcome? First, not give up 4 pins!
Second, reverse one of their losses that came by decision. Third, figure out the right bumping
across any key weight classes. Battery Creek had a slightly different look at regions this past
weekend (moving some wrestlers to their certified weight for State) and Summerville still managed
to be ahead of Battery Creek in 8 of 14 weight classes. See 8-AAAA Region Tournament results below:
103 -- Rodney Scott - Fort Dorchester, Chris Grimes - Summerville, John Perry - Battery Creek
112 -- Sonny Bugarin - Fort Dorchester, T.J. Hall - Summerville, Chris Bush - Battery Creek
119 -- Eli Ashby - Summerville, Kevin Gates - Battery Creek, Ron Milligan - Fort Dorchester
125 -- Gerald Jenkins - Fort Dorchester, Jake Johnson - Battery Creek
130 -- Seiji Borja - Fort Dorchester, Van Collins - Summerville, Bobby Whitman - Battery Creek
135 -- Wesley Dallas - Fort Dorchester, Mike Oehl - Battery Creek, Ashley Bracklein - Summerville, Branden Brown - West Ashley
140 -- Bryson Morgan - Battery Creek, Berlin Oliver - Summerville
145 -- Kevin Burns - Battery Creek, Cory Grooms - Summerville, Brent LaChance - Fort Dorchester
152 -- Rashaud Singleton - Battery Creek, Daniel Fredell - Beaufort, Josh Porter - Summerville, Tucker - Fort Dorchester
160 -- Christian Johnson - Summerville, Mel Capers - Fort Dorchester, David Miller - Battery Creek
171 -- Travis Wynn - Beaufort, Edwin Soto - Summerville, Kenoth Johnson - Fort Dorchester, Barry Jenkins - Battery Creek

215 -- Daunte Nixon - Fort Dorchester, Jon Montjoy - Summerville
285 -- Robert Quinn - Fort Dorchester, Andre Deweese - Summerville, Jonathan Smalls - Battery Creek
This will be a great Quarter-Final match unfortunately leaving one team behind, since truly both deserve
to be in the Final Four. We go with the 3x defending State Dual Champs in this one ...
SCMAT Prediction - Summerville wins
#11 Goose Creek (1st in 7-AAAA) at home vs. #1 Fort Dorchester (1st in 8-AAAA)
The #1 ranked team has to travel this round and they will meet up with another Region Champion that
is pleased to be at home and get any edge they can get. Coach B.D. LaPrad has won two 4A state titles, both
with different schools - Irmo and Dutch Fork, putting him into elite company with only one other coach, former
Coach Jim Barnes who also accomplished the same at Airport and Rock Hill. Though Coach B.D. LaPrad has far
less state trophy hardware compared with Coach Barnes (with 17) or the Summerville coaches over the last few
decades (Coach Steve LaPrad with 5 and Coach Kenny Walker with 6), many feel that a third 4A title at his
third 4A school will be a record no one will break for years to come. Round 3 is first up before we jump
to state title accomplishments, and we'll stick with the top team at least through this round ...
SCMAT Prediction - Fort Dorchester wins
